I cant connect to swbell dsl through my smc7004abr router, would enternet 300 be screwing up the config? Ive tried everything I can think of, just looking for confirmation.
This router will not work without a firmware update.
I just got off the phone with SMC tech support. It seems that there is a bit of a firmware problem with the latest 7004ABR. This is the latest model that is marked 12V just above the power jack on the back of the unit.
I seems that the hardware was updated and that the firmware has some problem and the unit will not work with the current firmware.
I want to give credit to SMC Technical Support. The tech was patient and diplomatic at dealing with a difficult situation. After he checked out all obvious and not so obvious configuration parameters he skillfully led me trough the discovery process to my options:
Wait for the firmware revision or take it back and buy a different router. He suggested either earlier model of the 7004 because the there was a later version of the firmware.
To me, this speaks volumes about SMC. Not only did the tech acknowledge that the equipment did not work he was good at it! If I was in the computer service business I would have offered him a job. Even before this the looked like a pretty good company with some decent products.
This leaves me with the dilemma; do I wait for a firmware update, and possibly score with a feature rich router that only cost me $64.71 (special price feature at national discount retailer)? Or, do I return it and settle for less features for a higher price?
I got sort of the same story when I called, I bought mine new via auction, Ill have to wait for the firmware I suppose!! This really is bad though, as earlier versions work fine. earlier versions have an on/off switch also.
Did you get a date when new firmware would be available?
The guy I talked to said maybe in a week, but I dont really have that much faith in his estimate.
