I'm planning on buying a 'Seagate ST3200822A Barracuda Plus 200GB 7200RPM ATA/100 8MB Cache'to make space for video editing.
This is my current set up :

Storage:
IDE Controller Intel(r) 82801BA Bus Master IDE Controller

Disk Drive Maxtor 2B020H1 (20 GB, 5400 RPM, Ultra-ATA/100)

will the new hard drive be compatible? sorry if it's painfully obvious but I don't want to risk buying the wrong thing.

Thanks in advance.

As you have 2 IDE channels, and your current HD is of lesser performance I would suggest that you do one of two things so you are not disapointed in performance.

Reason; 2 devices on the same IDE channel will perform at the lowest common denominator. You will want to isolate devices with equivalent performance to a channel. You most likely have a CD/DVD or 2.

1. Place your CD/DVD's on one channel(secondary), place both HD's (ATA/100) on the Primary channel.

2. Video editing can be CPU/HD intensive. You might obtain another IDE controller if you see poor/not optimal I/O performance. Also consider an additional fast HD to define as your "Page Swap" location, it is most likely on your 5400 drive currently.

Sorry, three things: You might also consider SATA. It all depends on if this is for personal pleasure use or deadline imposed business use.

You config should be well thought out to maximize I/O.

Thanks alot for the help rvnguy, but I'm actually just planning on replacing my current hard drive I should have made that clear in the question. I gather this will make things alot simpler?
