Sorry if this is the wrong forum. A friend wants to buy laptop with WIFI to access the Internet. Problem is he only has a cable type modem (currently hardwired to a desktop PC). Assuming the modem has a free Ethernet port is there any hardware he can plug into the ethernet port to provide wifi access? As with a wireless router - we need to be able to access the Internet when the PC is switched off.

Sounds like you need a Wireless Access Point (WAP).

There's many, but the Linksys WAP54G will fit the bill for about UK£45.

Thanks. Yes, I could replace the cable modem with a wireless model but .......... is there another alternative? Is there something that can be plugged into an ethernet port that will give wifi connectivity?

Not to put to fine a point on it, but the link John provided will do exactly that.

You take the cable that he uses top connect his modem to th laptop, and plug it into the Access point.

The Access Point will then create the Wireless Network and forward the connection to the modem and out to the Internet.

I can also suggest this one:
