Does anyone know why I get this message in my event log? "Hanging application msimn.exe, version 6.0.2600.0, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000."What ever it is its causing my PC to hang on the shut down screen and seems to be slowing my it down, any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Disable it from startup:

1) Start -> Run
2) type in msconfig
3) find the tab that says "startup" (is the last one)
4) uncheck the box for MS Instant messanger
5) as a precaution, also sign in to MSIM and in prefrences make sure it says, "do not start when windows starts", what that means is that MSIM won't automatically instal itself again in the startup option...

DO NOT MESS WITH ANYTHING ELSE IN THE MSCONFIG SECTION, IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT AN OPTION DOES, LEAVE IT ALONE...AND AS A PRECAUTION, BEFORE YOU DO MSCONFIG CREATE A SYSTEM RESTORE DATE... I have not failed; I have merely found 100,000 different ways of not succeding...

I have also noticed that every time I close down Outlook Express I get this message 'The instructions at "0x77154619" referance memory at "0x00994924." The memory could not be written.' Could this be the cause of my problems? Hope you can help

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Outlook Express.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.
