I own a dell that worked quite well and now wont get past the "starting up" screen. it wont even go say that its working, not one line will go across the screen. it wont boot/work any disk; cd or floppy. i would like to run my xp but it wont read anything. im trying to figure out the step in which place the error is occuring. i would like to run any sort of operating system but they cant.

audiogalaxy kazaa and such p2p softwares.

Is it the bios startup screen it won't get past? (as you say it won't boot floppy or CD I'm assuming this is likely). If its not ie, if its starting windows, what happens when you try to boot floppy or CD? Can you get into the bios?

Are you happy opening the case and checking all the connections & that cards are seated properly. Also, could remove all but the graphics card & any CD writer or zip drive and try again.

Difficult to diagnose with no obvious cause and no error message. Could you try to be a bit more detailed about what does happen when you boot, please?

the bios screen is fine and i can even get it in safe mode but just after all that i have it freeze on the "starting up" screen.
when i try to boot off disks meant for the system(bootdisk.com) it will still not work sometimes saying that a article is missing from the floppy. if trying to boot off the cd it wont even recognize it and continue on to "starting up" I can get into Bios but its helped none.

i have no problem taking apart the case and the connections. ill try those things you told me on dissasembling as well as checking connections.

the only possible thing ive gotten was that was a "keyboard error". so i tried to change the keyboard to an older simpler dell keyboard.

wolluf, you helped by telling me to dissassemble and then reassemble the computer. it seemed to have fixed all the problems. it was very odd to see it work by that simple idea but it was needed. i then proceeded to get rid of ME and update it to 2000 hopefully it will stay the same.

have a good night thanks so much for the help,
adam

Wolluf, I have a similar problem. I was messing about with my Dell Latitude CS laptop that runs on Microsoft Windows 2000, Operating System NT and accidentally chose to install Softex pccard32 software. Now when I switch on my computer, although it boots up okay, it is unable to load Windows 2000 Professional. It just sits at a blue screen. I'm trying to find a solution to removing the installation but I cannot access my computer yet to remove it. I think the only solution would be to reinstall Windows. I've tried pressing F8 at start-up where I get directed to a screen which asks me to select the operating system and show me one option [MICROSOFT WINDOWS 2000 PROFESSIONAL].
When I select WINDOWS 2000 I move onto Safe Mode screen and no matter what option I choose from this screen I always end back at the blue screen. If I press F8 a number of times it takes me to a DOS screen where it runs a list of partitions etc. but doesn't allow me to halt this screen and then it takes me back to the blue screen.

I contacted Softex direct and they advised me to try booting into safe mode and then going to add/remove programs from control panel and remove the program. They say I need to contact Dell Technical Support and ask them how to boot into safe mode on my particular machine but I believe I already know it's F8. Any ideas please?
