Why special French or German characters change in display

Hi All

I have got a problem. I have some records in my database with French or German characters e.g.:
SG - Société Générale or DRH - Pôle Distribution Bâtiment
What happens is when I retrieve them and display using vbscript it changes this to:
SG - Soci鴩 G鮩rale or DRH - P��Distribution B⴩ment
Can somebody tell me why this happens and how to get the correct display?

Special characters are not always supported by the characterset the browser uses. You should use character entities to display special characters instead of just typing the characters on your keyboard.

Thankx for replying but it's not the case of typing and displaying. I am reading them from a database and then displaying.

You can replace the characters in your database with the entities if it's possible. If the database is only used for the website I'd think about replacing the data in the database.

If it's not possible I have no idea about how it can be solved otherwise. I'm sorry...

no this database is not just for this site. So I need another solution

Are there a lot of diffrent characters that need to be changed? Otherwise you can use the 'Replace' - function in asp to replace the characters with the entities when generating the page. This does not affect the data IN the database but the data you get FROM the database to use in your webpage.
