Why is my connection slow

I got 2 pc one with windows 2000 pro and one with windows XP. I got a hub and the pc is connected with each other.
When I ping the computers I get a response that is faster then 1ms. The problem is everytime I am trying to get files from one of the computers it takes for ages to find the other computer. And when I am trying to add a printer on the xp over the network. It will find the printer but I cannot ad it.

I hope some one can explain what to do.

go the machine the printer it attached to and share it. (right click on the printer and select sharring) BEHOLD! As Steve Jobs introduces us the latest in desk-lamp technology!
