Just wondering.

cuz we be dumb and cheap.
Why did bill gates ever release such a monster on the world, and why won't he give me a 'real' Window to see the world with?
Oh, by the way, could u send me a free authorized copy of xp , NT, or Windows 2000?

Umm, probably for the same reason why people still use Win 95/98/NT.

It's like if all you need is a calculator and you've already got one that came with a box of cracker jacks, why go out and buy a TI-85?

If it does what they need it for, chances are they're not going to upgrade just for the sake of upgrading...

P.S. Oh yeah, and don't forget that newer OS's don't run as well on older hardware. Try getting XP to run smoothly on a PI 166MHz with 64MB of RAM. XP? no. Win95/98/ME? runs good nuff.

My ME will not run the Microsoft Flight Simulator WWII and Comanche Helicopter Sim. Maybe I should download to Win 95 that ran it fine before I 'upgraded'(Downgraded)?
Why is Bill GAtes punishing me?
When I went to the Toshiba to download updates my computer it locked up.
For my next computer I think I will try Linux on a non Toshiba box.

$500 to $1500 for a new computer is a lot of money for most of the world and even lots of folks in the more affluent contries. And as cdogg said, if it does what you want, why upgrade?

Though few still run pure DOS and Win 3.1 and Windows for WOrkgroups, and hopefully not many of fickle Windows 95, there's many Windows 98, 98se and Me that work just fine, thank you! And that's a big problem for Microsoft since they don't want to support older Windows systems' security vulnerabilities. Sure everyone with XP can get SP2 for the latest protection, but that still leaves all those older systems out there with either no more fixes or users who don't know to get the patches.

Personally, I've been itching for a laptop for the last 10 to 15 years, but since I often build and upgrade my system piece by piece, a laptop is a unit you've got buy all at once, not piecemeal.

orepecos,

"My ME will not run the Microsoft Flight Simulator WWII and Comanche Helicopter Sim."

My 98se and Me installs run those games just fine and Me is especially my choice for an older (like PII)laptop...about any piece of hardward you can plug into it just simply works without hunting for or juggling driver disks when on the road.

But what do I know...one of my laptops runs DOS/Win3.11 and another dual boots DOS/Win3.11 and 98se.

My suggestion would be to tweak Me a bit...it'll play the games you mentioned if your install and hardware are up to it. Your problem is not with Me nor is it with Toshiba. Click on the FAQs button at the top of this thread and you'll be on your way to something that works.

Well I will take a look at those sites, but I didn't have to 'tweak' Windows 95 to run the games. And if tweaking means to get to a dos prompt and change things, then that is way beyond me.

Going from Windows 95,98 and ME which, from what I understand, work on the DOS shell (or something like that) to Windows 2000 or XP (which are built on NT structure )can be risky and/or problematic endeavor for some computers and processors. Some applications might not work anymore or you might have problems if you don't have enough memory, hard drive space or a fast enough processor. I've used everything from DOS to WinXP. Win2000 is pretty solid in my opinion and my laptop with WinXP has been stable also but it sure updates a lot from the 'mother ship'. I recently installed SP2 on the laptop and haven't had any problems yet. I have a machine I use a lot at home with WinME on it and it definitely has some issues and aggravates me often enough but Microsoft wants too much money for op system upgrades. Frickin money-hungry and greedy company that makes us pay too much for their so-called 'new and improved' versions of OS. Oh well. I'm thankful for Windows anyway. Macintosh is too expensive and you can't do anything in the box. I couldn't even find a place to buy a power supply for a Mac computer someone gave me so I could replace it myself. Linux is interesting though being open-source and all. I've had some UNIX experience and might try a Linux OS change at home at least if I can get get up enough incentive, nerve and stay off golf courses so much, hehe.

I tried to upgrade to win2000, but after fighting with it for 3 days, I have given up and gone back to ME. I tried every way but with a hammer, but all failed. But even that wasn't easy. Win2000 kept fighting me from going back to ME. I have accepted that I will just have to reload every year or so, and will probably have to quit using online banking.

The key to getting ME off of a system to pave the way for 2000 (or any OS) is to just flat-out reformat the hard-drive before putting the 2000 disk in.

I had a hell of a time getting ME off of a laptop that I had, for the reasons you mentioned (it doesn't want to go!). I think I finally had to create an old-school DOS floppy, boot to it, and then reformat C: from it.

This formatted the C: drive in FAT format, and I reformatted it again in NTFS after booting to the 2000 disk.

If you're talking about a desktop instead of a laptop (and you don't mind taking your machine apart for 15 minutes), you can yank the drive, set it up as a slave in another machine (preferably a 2000 or XP box), and reformat it right through Windows Explorer.

Although it sounds like a pain, it's actually easier than the floppy-disk method-- unless you have an ancient chassis that doesn't come apart too easily.
