why doesnt xp pro recognize usb drives after installing SP1?

Hi
before I installed SP1 my usb drives were working properly, both my printer connection and connection to the cable modem were through USB. (why I have to use USB with my cable modem is another issue..)
However after I installed SP1 the USB drives stopped working completely, even though they seem ok in the device manager..
can anyone help me with this?

Unplug all option USB devices.
Download and apply:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en;822603

Use Device Manager and uninstall the USB root hubs.
Reboot and let XP rededect the USB root hubs.

Reconnect the USB devices.

I had already installed the kb but uninstalling the usb hubs did the trick,
