I am trying to figure out why our server 2k3 was set up to have "Mail Server (pop3, SMTP)" in the "Manage Your Server" area? POP3 is web based I thought and is not dependant of the server??
It just seems like a service that is running for no reason. We dont store our mail on our server, and we dont connect though our server to recieve mail (seeing I can get our mail from my home just as well). Further more, why would you want this service???
Most of the small businessess I work with already have POP accounts in place, and when/if they move over to Server 2003, and specifically exchange, you can consolidate both exchange and POP into the same inbox -removing the POP server from the client I believe in theory this also saves on network bandwith.
In SBS, there is a built in POP3 connector to retreive email for you and dump it in your Exchange environment. But the POP3 service shouldn't be running unless you have users connecting to Exchange with a POP3 client like Outlook Express.
If Exchange is installed on the box, then SMTP would be installed and running as well.
