I just put Windows 2000 Professional on my computer. For some reason my USB does not work. I have a UMAX Astra 2100U scanner and a Tyan motherboard and have went on the sites to download the latest drivers. I made sure USB was enabled in my bios and my USB controllers are working correctly in my Device Manager (USB Root Hub and Standard univesal PCI to USB Host Controller) but it still has error in my USB devices. Is this a common problem with 2000 or am I doing or not doing something.

Go to microsoft.com and see if windows 2000 will work with your usb. That was the major downfall of windows 2000, it doesn't work with some hardware. Same problem happened to me, but it was modem. You might need to go to the store and buy a new usb card. I think they're only like $20 or less. ~Javrix

If you gave an infinate number of rednecks, an infinate number of shotguns to shoot at an infinate number of street signs, they would eventually write Romeo and Juliet in braille.

I have a UMAX and had a similar problem with 2000. Did you get the USB to work correctly within Device Manager?

I did finally get it to work. Here is what you must do. First you need to delete your old usb devices and controllers and restart your computer. Then put in your universal standard bus host controller from your motherboard CD or web site. Then when you put in your USB root hub go in through add new hardware and then pick the driver of the scannner not the motherboard. Skip the recommended search for drivers and go to put it in yourself and go to the UMAX USB drivers folder and pick it from there. Then restart and it should work.

Has this worked for anyone else? I have the exact same scanner and problems. I have not tried this yet. I just don't want to mess up a completely set up computer. Mike Wills

USB scanners and win2k seem to be a problem for EPSON Perfection 1200 too. I have the same problem and even after 2 hours with Epson tech support trying to install and reinstall their updated win2k drivers, no joy. Finally reinstalled win2k and after much fiddling, it just decided to install. Went through so many combos and variations that I don't even know what finally worked.

Nothing I did seemed to hurt the rest of the set up. I didn't have to uninstall my USB drivers either.

Hmm... maybe I will just tell my parents to use it on the Win98 machine then. Mike Wills
