When I enter a basic addition formula in a cell, it brings up a dash (-) as the result. Can anyone help me please?

Can you post the formula?

Regards, Phil

It is literally: Sum=(F5+F56+F102+F175)

I've never seen anything like it!

Nor me,
Whats the source data?
Have you tried changing the cell formatting?

Cell format is set to 'Accounting' so I can't see that that would be a problem. Unfortunately it's not my spreadsheet and I am trying to find out for the Director of the company. I've asked him to give me a copy of the sheet but apparently it's confidential so I'm not sure how he expects me to work out what the problem is!

As far as I can tell, the source data is simple numbers in the different cells.

it's cell formatting that's the issue here - I'm guessing your sum adds to zero

the "Accounting" format holds this character for zeros but it may also be included as part of a custom format
