Why does it take forever to log in?

I have a Siemens Senic Mobile 510 agp. A portable computer because I travel a lot and work at home.<br>I use Ras when working at home. The login time is around 3 minutes with my Xircom 56k/100mbit modem/networkcard. That I can understand and accept. The wierd part is when I take the computer to work. The login-time is still 3 awfully long minutes! Why? <br>has RAS any known bugs that causes this?<br>

1. I´m logging on to a domain. (rather big one if that matters)<br>2. there are some shares connected to local server (not over the wan-links though).<br>3. No I´m using it purely at home. Is there some way I can turn off the service RAS in a hardware profile? (I want to believe that RAS is the bandit, since the problems began shortly after I began using it)<br>4. when I press enter after entering the password it takes about three minutes before I can use the computer. <br><br>hope this help!<br><br>

Does your domain use Roaming Profiles?<br>If thats the case, the delay in logging on may be that your <br>profile is to big.Try emptying your Temporary Internet Files<br>and make sure you don't save any files directly to your desktop.

We (the corporation) don´t use any sort of profiles since it is so slow. I dont use login script any more because I thought that had anything to do with it.<br>Everything began right (or shortly) after I installed RAS and began working at home.<br>Is it possible that it wants to login with RAS instead of using the LAN? and when it fails it tries the ethernet instead ? If so, how do I turn that off?<br>

First, if there are any shares on a local server that are set to be reconnecting on logon - NT will try to connect to them - whether successfully or not - very time consuming.<br><br>Second, you can create second hardware profile through SYSTEM applet of Control Panel. Next, you can disable RAS for one of the profiles through SERVICES applet. I'm not sure, but I think it's also possible to remove it completely for that hardware profile through NETWORK applet in Control Panel.<br><br>Regards!

I've tried disconnecting all my shares and login. The time was still 2 min 50 sec. I found some strange stuff in the registry:s run and run once &quot;directory&quot;. <br>hkey_local_machine/software/microsoft/windows/current_version/run&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>name: Web browser Check&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>data: loadvc.exe<br>what does that file do?<br>when I deleted that and my antivirus program I gained about 30 sec in my logintime... <br>now 2 min. 20 sec.<br><br>If I disable the RAS service, I must login locally and turn the service on, then logout and login through ras. that I couldn't manage.<br><br>Is there some third party program that can produce hardware-profiles. I want to tell which services I want to load at startup and which drivers I want with each profile. <br><br>Does anyone have problems with pcmcia card in NT workstation? Can the pcmcia card have anything to do with my long logintime? <br><br>Voland: I've looked in control panel - network but haven't found anything regarding a hardware profile. As far as I know the only was is through control panel - System (as you said)

I'M SO HAPPY !<br><br>logintime is under 30 sec.<br><br>When I was looking through my services I found some items I once uninstalled. I once installed a tacacs server because I wanted a database with username and password for the routers and switches in our network. I really don't think that has anything to do with it. <br>One other thing I found was and old antivirus-program. That antivirus-program (F-Prot) was probably looking for a share I once had (antivirus-updates and more) on a server.<br>Even though I uninstalled it, it didn't delete all the files. As a conclusion, when you create hardware profiles you can go into settings of any service and set it to be enabled or disabled in any of the profiles.<br><br>Regards!
