why does /dev/rmt0.1 suddenly change permissions with no apparent reason ?!!!

it should be crw-rw-rw- however every so often it changes to c--------- !!!! thus making the backup fail !!

well strange

Is the "every so often" a fixed, recurring length of time?

Unless you've changed the ownership of the special file, only a process with root privileges can change the permissions.

Check root's crontab for possible culprits.

I've already checked the crontab, nothing strange in there.
There is no pattern to it, it can be fine for months and then suddenly it changes - I've started to log any events leading up to it so I can see if there's a pattern.

Additionally I would like to write a script that checks the status of the device (permissions) and informs me if it's wrong - maybe cron it in

Thanks for the advice.
