Hi,
New, factory installed setup of Win2003 SBS. Somehow there is an SMTP Connector installed, I never configured it, and don't think I need to use it. We are running Exchange 2003 with 10 users, the only special thing we're doing is a few users VPN (via Routing Remote Access) and they run Outlook over the VPN connection.

Somehow, mail is getting into the queue (maybe 10 messages a day), it takes awhile to leave the queue, some messages do, some don't....

Why would my mail be routing through the SMTP Connector?

You need the SMTP Connector for routing External E-Mail to the internet.

From memory SBS Automatically creates an SMTP Connector by default.

Thanks for the post...so the reason I ask is that mail is getting stuck in the SMTP Connector queue, and not getting out to the recipients. On my other SBS box for another client, it never had the SMTP Connector, and mail goes in and out no problem.

So I'm not sure why I would need the Connector, since we're only sending mail from the Internal LAN out, no one is really connecting from the outside via POP3 or anything.

I'm guessing the SMTP connector works with the POP3 Connector, so that when someone outside the network sets up POP email, it uses the POP3 connector to deliver mail and the SMTP Connector to retrieve mail?

I was thinking of deleting the SMTP Connector, as I don't think mail from the LAN should be trying to go out the Connector, thinking it should be going out via the SMTP Virtual Server...

right, u actually don't need a SMTP connector for send/receive external emails, a smtp VS is quite enough(exchage default setting).

I think you would normally use the smtp connector if you want to setup custom smtp routing. You might want to setup a connector for a particular company and add encryption. You do not need it as benlu said.

Cool...thanks for the advice. I removed the SMTP Connector, and now all mail is flowing out the SMTP Virtual Server. Thanks, I wanted to get some advice before doing the irreversible DELETE!
