When I double click on files in Windows Explorer the appropriate software tries to start then fails with some version of communication error. i.e. I cannot double-click on a DOTX file and have Word open it.

Would someone please tell me why not?

Thanks

Hi folks

From what I gather you are saying, "Get new RAM!" Fine, I can do that.

FTR: Memtest ran for over 11 hours last night and was, despite the PassMark people saying it defaults to four passes, on its seventh pass. 2483 errors. Typical error line:

Test 10
Pass 7
Failing Address 0009021f0c08 - 2306.9MB
Good f2c83385
d f2c83305
Err Bits 00000080
Count 2474
CPU 0

I got bored so went to "Select Test" and picked 11. It checked through to the same memory area and went ballistic. I let it run past the million errors before stopping it. I had to switch it off at the was because it was not answering the keyboard. Still no report or and sign of any way to get one.

Forgive me, but from my experience Memtest is a waste of a considerable amount of time. [curse]

I'll organize some RAM and see what that does.

Thanks for the help, folks. [wavey2]

MEMTEST is not a waste of time. Not sure why you say that. It found your problem. You only need to run it a few minutes if errors start popping up. It's only if there are NO errors that I would let it run a few passes. No need to run it indefinitely which is the default mode. Then you pull part of the RAM and re-test with each stick alone. If you only have a single stick then things are even simpler - replace stick.

Please do not take this as ingratitude for your assistance, [noevil] but I have to say that I know that now, goombawaho, but I did not know it some twelve hours of machine time ago. Perhaps, in recommending the use of Memtest, it would be possible for people to pass on that information in the first place. It would be even better if Passmark included that information in their interface. Either of those actions could save people as inexpert as myself that considerable amount of time to which I referred.

Thanks again. I do appreciate the help.
