I have Roadrunner broadband service in NYC with a Toshiba PCX1100U modem using the ethernet connection.

I want to setup a laptop and desktop using a router- nothing that should be complicated.

I bought a Linksys router and couldn't get any access through it after 3 days of tinkering and decided it was the hardware or some compatibility issue.

Bought a Netgear RP614 router and a week later after extensive time with Netgear "tech support" I am still unable to get access through the router. It worked briefly- about 5 min for no apparent reason and then quit again.

Netgear blames the cable company and they don't want to even hear the word router so I am stuck. Any ideas?

???

Don't know if I can help you, I use a Linksys router with AT&T at home in the manner you describe. I set it up in about 1/2 hour with no issues.

I guess you'd have to describe in detail how you tried to set it up. Basically, you have an external IP address for the cable modem that Roadrunner assigns dynamically, and an internal IP address for each computer that the router either assigns dynamically, or you assign manually. Newposter

I have had the same problem with Comcast cable. I have a Linksys wireless router with a 4 port switch. I've put the wireless card in a laptop and can get it to recognize the wireless network fine but cannot get it to access the internet through the cable modem. I also have the router directly attached to a computer and cannot get the comp to get to the internet either. any help on this would be great guys.

Here are some additional details on the router setup.

The cable modem is connected to the WAN socket on the router and the computer to one of the 4 ports. I have powered down the cable modem, computer, and router after each attempt. The problem seems to be between the router and modem.

I don't think its an issue with the ethernet card setup- both computers work great when the router is not involved and I can setup the router from the computer so they seem to be communicating.

In the router setup menu you can autodetect an internet connection. The Netgear tech support told me it was a problem with the cable company when this didn't work.

What I have found is that if you repeat this about 6 times it will finally recognize the connection (as a dynamic IP in this case). When you try and access a website it no longer works.

An issue with the MAC address has come up with Roadrunner and some other routers so I have tried what has been recommended for the other routers. This is to assign the MAC address as that of the computer originally hooked up to the cable modem.

This doesn't change things in my case and I have tried the MAC address of both computers and the router.

That leaves either some other settings or the router itself is faulty. I would take it back but as I mentioned, it is the second router I have tried (prev. bought a Linksys).

Any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

there should be no problems with setting up your router to the cable modem. if you have spoken with Netgear support and they have done good troubleshooting with you, it should work fine. if the guys you talked sound like they know what thier doing they should be able to get it to work. i would like to mention that we have installed bad routers from Linksys and Netgear often.

there is nothing I can tell you about the configuration of the router that netgear support should have tod you already.

I have set up several Netgear RP 114 routers (I guess the predecessor to the 614), and they had and option to specify that you are using a Toshiba-RR modem.

It is possible that the 614 has the same option. It is in the same menu that you would set up a ppoe connection, one of the options being Toshiba-RR.

I have the exact same issue with a Lynksys router - acually 2 different models - and spent 3-4hours with lynksys tech support and have yet to solve the issue.
My cable modem is a Toshiba PCX2200U.

Both routers worked fine if i set them up between 2 pcs (one on the wan and the other on the lan)

when i do get a DHCP ip on the wan and ping the wan default gateway, i get 90% packet loss.

of course the cable company (time warner -Houston, TX) does not "support Routers" - although i recenlty received a flyer in the mail from them with reasons why i should hire them to set up a home network for me ... - coincidence?

Every one i know who has Roadrunner here in Houston, has a lynksys router and set it up in 20-30minutes and has no issues.

if you're getting packet loss, connect just one pc to the router and see if the loss is still there. if so, call them back and slap that in thier face. one thing i don't understand about some support is they take thier "policies" and make them a reason to get a low call time. they forget that they can't check for packet loss on the modem and in return send out a work order.
