I have a cisco 1600 connected to a linksys 8-port switch using cat-5. Why isnt Full duplex or 100MB not being auto negotiated?

Is the auto-negotiating done by the switch and the host or between the two systems that are attached going through the switch?

Thanks in advance

Is the switch a managed switch? If it is you can try forcing the setting on the interfaces.

Other things to check
Is the switch close to the router? If not, is the cat5 that connects them run close to any power lines or flourescent lights or any other source of EM emmitters?
Also is the cat5 wired correctly?

I have witnessed problems like that where the ends were not wired correctly.
Check the interface on the router and look for errors or packet drops that could indicate a problem with the line. The interfaces will only set themselves to 100 mb or full duplex when they can successfully transmit at that rate. If they have to they will come down to 10mb or half duplex to keep a good link.

Hope that helps some. Post the results of a "show int ethx" where x is the ehternet port on the router.

The negotionation is done by each switch, if they are both trying to do it it may not work, try turning off the auto-nego on the Cisco, and see if that does it.

Also confirm that both devices do indeed support 100/full

pollux0,
The default ethernet port on cisco1600 series routers is 10 baseT. Unless you've installed a FastEthernet card into the router you will not be able to run 100/FULL. Hence your auto-negotiation is working OK.

BTW, you can tell if your router supports 10/100 by how you configure the interface port. eg..:
interface ethernetX = 10 baseT
interface FastEthernetX = 10/100

thanks for the tips. The 1600 only has 10baseT. It must be an older model! I switched out for a 1700 and now have fd 100

Don't forget that LOTS of older NIC's no matter what device don't auto-neg well, when in doubt - FORCE IT to one or the other.

Does anyone remember TLP's or LML? Give me a -15db down test tone or give me death!
