who's "online"

is there some sort of module that I could add to a database so that users could see what other users were also "online" so to speak? the organization would like for end users to be able to contact other end users who are using the database if they have reason to....this would sort of be like a contact management system on a web page where it shows you what users are also logged in????

If anyone knows of a resource or direction to look I would greatly appreciate it!
