I am starting a web page design company and have some clients that need hosting, e-commerce, and domain names. What companies are good for that and what kind of cost should they expect. Thanks.

I love hostway.com. They let you have the option of a unix, or windows2000 server. And they're pretty cheap too. Less then $25 a month for the w2k server, with over 200mb of storage space, and 10gb of traffic/month. ~Javrix

For about $35 a year you can have a domain name and web hosting with NO banners or ads from You also get One pop3 email address and one email forward, cgi, etc.

I've been a happy customer of for a couple of years - I have three sites on them. $15.95/month gets you 400 Mb disk space and a goodly number of tools. Unix only, though. Robert Bradley

Just a warning to anyone who may be thinking of getting a new UK host.

AVOID FASTHOSTS.

We were on their standard service, which had a great control panel, but the service was poor (Slow downloads, script timeouts and pleny of down-time), so we decided to pay the upgrade cost of a few hundred quid to move onto their Win2k server. Good control panel again, no more script timeouts, always up, or should I say, Up for the first 2 weeks.

As more and more people got stressed with their old service, more upgraded to the Win2k server. And as soon as traffic started flowing, Server errors, timeouts and down time were back bigger and more stressfull than ever.

I won't get sued if I give you their URL. Go ahead, sign up, but I seriously WOULD NOT recommend it.....

Here you go, The Power 'Failure' Behind Web Hosting! LOL - Sorry Fast Hosts. We did tell you enough about the problems, but were they ever sorted??? NO.

HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD PROBLEMS WITH FASTHOSTS. WOULD BE INTERESTING TO HEAR WHAT HAS HAPPENED 2 U AND HOW IT WAS FIXED. ----------------------------------------

To get the fastest services, you want someone who is actually part of the "back-bone" of the internet. I would recommend XO - if you want good speed and service. You can always signup with a cheap hosting company, but you always get what you pay for... ~Javrix

This is what I found at TopHosts:
Welcome to TopHosts.Com, the world's largest independent Web hosting resource site! Each month, hundreds of thousands of Web developers and small business owners visit TopHosts.Com to search our host database, review our monthly Top 25 ranked hosts, and access our extensive Webmaster resources.

From there I found in their top 25 sites for a client.
They offer many plans and my client went with the Solo IV and paid $179.40 for 1 full yr, Setup $50 waved with yr sign up.
This was a new site and their sign up included 1 yr free domain registration.
Include FrontPage extensions
$14.95 per month
500MB Web Space
CGI
10 POP3 e-mail accounts.

I've always found that although these cheaper hosts seem to give a really good deal, you can be certain that they will be lacking something. Bad tech support is common with a lot of these companies, and if your site goes down, don't expect an instant reply or fix.

Fasthosts are really bad, they did an 'upgrade' to Win2K servers and buggered it all up, lots of their customers (esp. resellers) lost their sites for over 3 months!

Kikkonetworks also seem like a good deal too, but guess what? Yes, it appears that they don't know their arse from their elbow either.

I have now gone for a more expensive host after spending the last three years moving from one crap host to another.

I am with a small outfit hailing from Halifax in the mighty north of the UK. £15pcm (ex. VAT) gets me a single e-mail address (not a spam-loving-catch-all address), and a fully-fucntioning IIS5 server (ASP, DB's, SSI's, etc.), and I can ring tech support at any point and they will sort it out within a day or two.

Am I being ripped off? Maybe... But at least I know I won't be suffering the woes of the cheaper hosts who neither care about their customers or the problems they have. Ahdkaw

OK, brace yourself - how about $7.99 A YEAR for 200Mb space, ASP support and a subdomain, CGI, email forwarding, and some other bit's and pieces. I use them for a huge ASP powered forum and they're as fast as....well, er, a very fast thing. They're helpful too. Just go to I know there's not a lot in the way of content there, but don't let that fool you. They're very good, they're based in the UK (so they're honest chaps).

And yes I did say $7.99 A YEAR! They do free hosting with ads, but, come on, how much is $7.99 if you're considering spending more than this a month on a host? Give em a go! Highly recommended!

Hope that's helpful!

One host NEVER to use is
All the features look very impressive but the uptime is shocking to say the least.

They will host your site for free without ads(you won`t find many of these!) so you have to expect problems.

I have a site hosted with them and this week alone the uptime has been approx 55%!!!! YES THAT WAS 55%, No typo.LOL

And guess what, the site is down at the moment too!!!

!!!YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

vr9.com is also a free web hosting to consider. They are growing very fast and keep on trying to improve an already pretty neat package. ''Life is like a box of chocolate...''
