Which Windows 2003 Server to buy for SharePoint Single User 2

Looks like the cheapest is Web edition (Standard is over 1000), but I would need SQL server, I guess.

I am a technical documentation consultant, currently working on SharePoint Services for a client.
Since I am new to SharePoint, I would like to have SharePoint Services and InfoPath at home, either on my laptop or desktop computer, for experimental and self-experience purposes.

My question is: What exactly do I need to purchase and install? Which Windows Server 2003 edition or alternative?
I currently have Windows XP Sp2.
I am also considering purchase of MS Office 2003, including Visio 2003 and Front Page 2003, but could not find a bundle that includes all of this.

Yes if you purchase the Web Edition you will have to use the full SQL Server.

I would do as philhege suggest go with the Standard Edition of Windows Server, and then you do not need to use the full version of SQL you can use the MSDE (if you go with the Web Edition your additional cost will be the for the full SQL).

Looking at Microsofts web regarding office it seems as you say that they do not ship any office edition with the Visio or FrontPage 2003 (but you can add them when doing the purchase and perhaps get a better price)

Regards,
Thomas

If I understood correctly, it is cheaper to buy the standard edition WS2003 than web + full sql.

Next question, if I may, is:
Do I have to replace WinXP with Win Server 2003?
Will all my graphical and multimedia apps work with Windows Server 2003 just like they are currently working under XP Pro?

Hi,

I did not check the exact prices but just go with the list prices that Microsoft has. I would think that SQL add a higher cost than going with the W2K3 Standard.

Regarding your applications you currently are using on your XP Pro, they "should" work, but that might depend on the software itself.

Thomas

Thank you Thomas2000
I guess now I have enough info to go ahead and buy what I need. :)
