I am setting up my first apache server, and since Linux isnt agreeing with any of my 3 candidate machines I am stuck going windows based. I need opinions on which version of windows (98, NT 4.0 workstation or NT 4.0 server) would be best to use and what are the pros and cons of each. This server will be public to the internet and will host 3 or 4 websites. It will be a low end machine, either a P75 or P133 and a limited amount of ram. Also, will I need to have virus software on this server?

Windows requires so much overhead I don't think you want a P75 or 133 running a web server. However, if you are content with something that will be maxed out, I would say run anything but 98. I've found it to be unstable with Apache and require constant rebooting. However, you need 64+ MB RAM for the other programs.

I use Win2K Pro, no troubles. Newposter

No I'm not content with my server being maxed out or anything windows based for that matter, but ultimately I plan to have a working Linux box to work with. This is pretty much temporary, basically an experiment at this stage. I think I have decided to give it a try on NT workstation. Any of these machines would eat their head if I tried to load 2kpro on em.

nt/2k plus apache ... atleast 256megs ram
nt/2k swallow upto 180megs just running alone
plus like 12megs for every instance of apache
anything 166mhz+ would run nicely

I ran Apache on a 166mhz machine with Win 98. I hate that OS, but it didn't really give me any problems with Apache. I mainly used it to test CGI scripts, and serve some static pages, without a lot of traffic. I've had to reboot, but not because if Apache. I plan to use Linux in the future.

I went ahead and set it up on the P75 with 72meg and used NT4.0 workstation. I patched it all up and its been chuggin right along for about a week now. My goal is to get the p133 with 64 meg set up with Linux but I cant seem to get it working with anything above Red Hat 6.2. Ive tried 7.2 8.0, mandrake 8, and even slack. Rh 6.2 is the only thing that I can get to install on any of my 3 candidate machines.
