I have to choose my training for my company for server side web programming. As of now, I already am familiar with a little coldfusion. However, being that I am allowed to choose (per my company)anything, I was wondering if anyone could advise on maybe the pros and cons of which technology would be best to learn for the long term. Such as PHP, ASP.NET, coldfusion, etc. etc. I really have little programming knowledge so I want to make the right choice with the right technology. ( I know Javascript) but really nothing about server side technologies. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I agree with martinchivers, how often do you hear of linux/apache being hit by viruses?

Or those silly service packs needed or those silly security patches. M$ has lots to learn. There is an alternative.

People like deecee are misled and ignorant of the real facts. You yongsters are far too much into the latest technology, you do not know any computing history.

Who says im misled - I use php, mysql and my server is Linux Based. I am led by MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY.

Is this CLEAR. Screw History, It wont pay my bills, put food on my table, or take me to the doctors when Im sick. I never once said MS was better, or which he should learn. I answered his question and I am assuming he likes that little thing called: MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY.

Microsoft appeals to the average user -- who has the: MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY.

You and I know the advantages of Linux over MS but we dont pay our selves with the: MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY.

In the world of business MS has learned all it needs to, it knows how to make the: MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY.

I have nothing against MS because I hate to say it but they do appeal to the average user and addressed the issues that an average Computer user wants. Most people dont know that a command prompt is!

The question asked Which technology to learn?:
My answer still stands -- LEARN EVERYTHING MICROSOFT HAS TO OFFER YOU IF SOMEONE ELSE IS FOOTING THE BILL -- EVEN IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT LEARN EVERYTHING FROM THEM. Its not about a Linux thing, or a Micrsoft thing, or a Apache thing, its a: MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY THING.

GO where that is and THAT is what YOU should LEARN.

sometime you just gotta say "WHAT THE @#*% !!"

Deecee, I asked and you answered exactly what I was looking for in the question, and I appreciate it, for I am all about the MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY

Thanks !!!

Just to throw in one more opinion...

You never really stated what you wanted this server sided programming for. In my opinion, with a general statement like yours, there's no question PHP is a better fit. That said, ASP, especially ASP.NET might just fit better here and there. For example if you coding an Intranet solution for which you'd like to create custom forms and use RPC calls, chances are you'll be able to do more rapid development in ASP.NET. If you want to do rapid development and you have C coders on staff, there's no doubt PHP is your winner.

You need to develop one of those charts for which I forget the name... basically PHP and ASP and Java Servlets across the time, all of your requirements, from cost to staff on hand to what you plan on accomplishing and what you consider to be likely future uses. Think about the interpreted vs. the compiled solutions, think about whether or not you're ok having your source code easily viewable, think about maintenance, think about which databases you want to hook into. etc etc.

Whether or not your facing the world or your intranet will matter alot, think security.

All that said, I hate ASP, my first self assigned task when I started working was to convert everything to PHP and watch the intranet uptime skyrocket as we switched over to Apache.

As you already have some CF knowledge im sure it is quite possible for you to furthur it simply with easycfm.com and this site they both seem very good at helping you learn.
Although i am learning CF at present if you are getting free training as is suggested by countless others ASP.NET is the one to go for.
Ok it has to work on windows only but as is pointed out most things run on windows. If you were paying yourself i would go CF. But as somone else is paying its good to have ASP.NET under your belt!

did you check out the original date of the post??

oops! thought i found this on the webdesign forum i think i must have found it when i searched instead sorry for bringing it up my bad! [thumbsup]

Can't give advice on the others but PHP is great. The only scripting language I knew before starting to learn PHP was javascript, and I found PHP very easy to pick up. It's very versatile and best of all, open source.

I do all my coding and testing on my own windows machine which has the WAMP arrangement installed (Windows, Apache, Mysql, PHP). When I've finished my scripts, I upload them to my Linux server.

The two sites I visit most, Yahoo and Friendster, have both recentley switched to using PHP exclusively. Yahoo switched from its own proprietary language, and Friendster switched from JSP (and runs much faster now by the way;-).

At least consider it. It kicks ass!

Just read the date of the first and the previous two threads.
I will now ban myself from the forum :)
