we've got a 2wire router behind which we've got a server. all ping attempts from outside the network to the server get rejected - we need to open up the relevant port for icmp messages so that ping requests to our server are accepted.

any ideas which port number(s) need to be opened? is it just port 80 (http)??

ICMP is IP traffic, and so "ports" such as TCP or UDP would require are not involved.

Some routers allow you to reject ICMP pings out of hand. Make sure your router is configured to allow this.

This is why some people use 2 firewalls. I think you can usually open up one location access through the firewall with most routers. This is called DMZ. It is a kind of public access. You may have to have that server on a static address.

the router we've got is a 2wire intelligent gateway. we've got a server behind it which we can't ping from outside the network.
