Hi,
I've got a Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe mobo with CPU AMD 2400. Due to to many problems, don't ask I'm having to reformat and upgrade. Os is XP.
Anyway I'm looking to for a two gig of Ram, dual channel matching pair. I know my board is dual channel and supports the DDR400 Pc3200 but have read that it supports the Corsair Pc3500 as well. Know anything about this?? Also I'm not sure if my board supports high density ram and if this would be a good idea to install.

Does any one know about this??
I just want some good fast reliable Ram for video editing work, not overclocking. What would you recommend??

Cheers,

Paul

Memory

- 3 x 184-pin DIMM Sockets support max. 3GB PC3200/PC2700/PC2100/PC1600 non-ECC DDR SDRAM memory
- Dual Channel Memory Architecture

Source: ASUS.DE
there is a link there called QVL Download which lists all qualified memory vendors and RAM speeds...

which does not mean that PC3500 would not work, it is trial and error... I would stick with one that is known to work, such as Corsair CMX512-3200C or other compatible (which ever is cheaper)... that way you are garanteed that it would work, unless the RAM is bad, where as with the PC3500 you really do not know until you try it...

Ok,

Thanks for your advice there.
Checked the site out and I will as you say go with one of the recommendations.

Couldn't see anything about the High Density though.
I read in a forum that asus boards do support high density Ram but can't seem to find any qualification on this.

Is it worth bothering with do you think??

Cheers,
Paul

Nforce2 chipset was a bit picky on memory and 1gig modules were rare around that era/time
You have a better chance of compatibility going with 1gig modules that are fully populated (double sided) than single sided high density simply because the higher density appeared later.
You have little to gain in real terms by going with faster ram considering that you only have a 266fsb XP2.4+ Thorouhbred core CPU fitted. In the bigger scheme of things I wouldn't be spending too much money on trying to get this older technology to go marginally quicker when you could buy a cheap entry level AM2 with generic memory that would blow your old rig away and for very little money.

Hi Martin,

I'm listening to what you are saying here. My thoughts exactly. I have been thinking of going for a complete new mobo and CPU. I'm aware the CPU I have is week on the FSB.

I've been looking at this AMD 64 3200 generation and thought of purchasing a bundle. Mobo and CPU.
But tell me what you think. Putting a cielling on it, say 200 pounds or 300 or there abouts and purchasing secondhand parts etc and assembling the machine myself what do you think I could get for that sort of money. I'm mainly interested in the mobo, CPU and ram. The hardrives I could sort out later.

But as I say I do intend to do some video editing and am pretty much fed up with the sticky/jerky response I've had for such a long time from this machine.

Give me some specs if you would, Mobo and CPUs etc, what to look for and what to check out.

Over to you.

Paul

200 to 300 £ = 275 to 415 €

» Athlon 64 X2 4400+, Brisbane, 2x 2300 MHz, 2x 512KB Cache, 1000MHz FSB - about 80 €
» 1024MB DDR2 (667) PC2-5300 DIMM 240pin Aeneon or Kingston - about 25 € each or 2 for 50 €
» MSI K9N SLI-2F, NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI, PCIe, SATA, Raid, GBit-LAN - about 80 €

Total sofar: 210 € (£150)

probably will need a new GFX card aswell:
» NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT, 256MB, MSI NX8600GT-T2D256E-OC/ D3, TV-Out, DVI - about 110 €

Total: 320 € or £ 230

All new parts! But mind you the prices I quoted are relative to Germany, not the UK, but I am quite sure they are comparative...

if you shop on eBay you would probably find a good source or at your local shop, there you can compare prices etc.

Ok,

I'll push on with this info that you have given here Ben.
I'd just like to thank you and all those that have provided much needed help and support here. I'll follow this up and build a new system I think. And my apologies Martin for 'taking' and not 'giving' in this forum.

I don't quite cut the grade technically, still learning. But if I see a thread and feel I can make a contribution then rst assured I will.

In the meantime many thanks to you all.
Much appreciated.

Wolf - that is his general signature, ergo it appears on all his comments, like mine with the sledgehammer...

so do not fret about it too much...

as most of us are glad to help...

Oh dear! I think I'm gonna have to change my signature as people keep seeing it as a comment aimed at them when it's meant as a general statement.

As far as your last question goes.
In that sort of price range (fairly budget)and presuming you are a non gamer, you can get a very reasonable base unit that to be frank, will literally blow the socks off your present setup.
Just recommendations.
Here goes.
Motherboard
CPU
memory
Graphics
case including quality power supply
DVDRW SATA

There you go... £257.00 FREE POST and a very capable dual core setup.

I said non gamer.. on second thoughts..after putting the specs together I would say that setup would be pretty capable of respectable frame rates in most games.
ebuyer are probably the biggest online supplier in the UK, I've never had any problems with them and prices include Free delivery albeit 5day turn around.

Martin...don't worry about your signature. It's a newcomer mistake to think the sig is part of the response, and quickly learned that it's not.

You can thank your sig for getting me to contribute...I consider myself a mere mortal among gods on this board and your sig encouraged me to come forward and try to offer advice. I have been flat out wrong with my offerings in the past but someone always points it out and corrects me in a non-confrontational manner. It's a good sig and the bottom line is it has a positive outcome.
