I have been asked to set up a small network of about 12 computers in one room. I am tempted to use wireless technology to connect and have at present a server with win2003 server on it. Nothing yet has been configured and some of the workstations will run xp pro and win 98. I have since been told that it is an easier proposition to use xp pro on the server as it is a more friendly os and is a better product. Could anyone offer advice on which os to use and perhaps point me in the direction of a web site to help my use of wireless setup as it is not a subject that i know much about.
PS am in UK - dont know if this makes a difference with compliance etc.
Many thanks
Tim

Hmm XP pro = work station OS and not a server OS. I would go with the server OS because you have more than 10 workstatsions on your network. XP Pro will only allow upto 10 concurrent connections at one time. While 2003 will allows as many connections as you want.

Running windows 2003 you will have a central system of authentication instead of going around each computer and adding users to each computer which you would have todo with Windows XP. By setting up Active Diretory and making your server a Domain Controller all usesr will authenticate against that. You will be able to setup shares on the server including printers and space for people to store their data.

Also have you already brought the wireless equipment it seems a bit of an expensive way to go just for one room. If you are just setting up 1 room with computer i would use CAT5 with 100mbit switch and 100mbit network cards. This will be alot cheaper setup. Also if its a small room you can run gigabit ethernet over cat5 upto 30meters.

That is my recommendations :

Server : Win2k or 2k3 Server, Can act as a domain controller if you want a better control on access

Workstations : Windows 2k or Xp Pro will be better, Win98 is not a very good OS for networking

Network : 1gbps to the server, 100mbps to each workstation. A good brand 16 100mbps + 1 1gbps ports switch will do a great job (Like 3com)
