Hey Folks,

I've got a new Sun x4150 which we loaded Solaris 10 (64bit) on. It's working great.

Now I need to load Oracle 9.2.0.1.0 on it (same as on a Sun Sparc V440) to migrate a DB over.

Which version of Oracle should I install ?

I suspect Oracle 64bit for SPARC Solaris is right, although the Sun box doesnt have SPARC processors, it has Intel Xeon processors. Is this right ?

Maybe the Solaris x86-64? [noevil]

Yeah, thats what I want ... is Oracle x86-64bit ... is there such a thing ? .. dont think I have CD's for it.

You would have to do an "upgrade".

Some prefer creating new 10g db and doing the export/import approach. [3eyes]

Hi Exie,

Do you still have access to your Oracle 9i installation on the current server?

The most efficient way ( and the most recommended on this board) is to do a full export of your data (not system files though) on the Oracle 9, then an import into Oracle 10 system.

If you try bringing over data files (although I haven't tried the exact setup you have) you might have issues with a SUN based data file going onto an Intel based system. Since you might have a mixture of 32 and 64 bit, etc... which I ran into and had some problems with.

Good Luck

I don't think it's a matter of might have problems, more will have problems!

I want to be good, is that not enough?

Thanks guys.

I found on Metalink that 11G will be supported on Solaris 10, but just not yet.

So tomorrow I'll go with 10G-R2 on Solaris 10 (x86)... 64 bit all round (gotta soak up that 16GB of ram).

Yes - the 9i is still available on a Sun V440 with Solaris 9, all 64 bit.

We'll try the export/import and see how we go. Thanks for the tips.
