I know there are a great many versions of Linux but I wish to start trying one. Can anyone suggest a good Linux? I am looking for one that has technical support so I am not too worried about buying one. I live in the UK so has to be based here.
If you're starting out, you could do a lot worse than Ubuntu. Since it's one of the most common distros for new users, there is a wealth of (easy to follow) help available.
Carlsberg don't run I.T. departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.
I have downloaded Ubuntu but it will not load. It stops the computer so I have to re-boot. During the day a friend lent me Susi 10 the complete box. That started to load but said it could not find the installation CD.
My computer setup is only one Sata hard drive and an IDE CD Rom drive. As I have only reformatted the hard drive to clear a windows operating system, I cannot understand why neither program will load. I would be grateful for any suggestions.
There most likely a fault with your computer, linux installs tend to highlight these more than a windows install.
Ideally, information on the point the installation fails would help us to help you. If a liveCD version works I would suspect the hard drive, or cabling. If you still get problems, I'd suspect the RAM.

Hi.
If I were you, I would try a Live CD or DVD first, Like knoppix or one from the list located here. There are even ones that can run on a USB drive, just in case it's your CD/DVD drive acting up:
Also you may want to try a bootable diagnostics CD/USB device first to check your Hardware, like Hiren's Boot CD, etc... There are Hardware checks you can run that are very easy to understand.
There's a also a small program tha can fit on a floppy/USB device called Memtest86 (
I downloaded Ubuntu version 7.04 and copied it to cd. It starts to load and when it asks to be installed I get the following error message.
26.250676 MP-BIO BUG: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC
26.429367 KERNAL panic - not syncing: IO-APIC + timer doesn't work! Boot with apic=debug and send a report.
Then try booting with the 'noapic' option.
When I try to load the Suse 10 that also gets as far as asking me to install then says put the install disk in.
As both programs get as far as asking to install I cannot see why I am getting error messages.
As I could not get Ubuntu to load I kept trying Suse 10 which also did not want to load but eventually it did. It formatted the NFTS disk and asked for user name and password which I made a note of. When I was asked to re-boot it would not accept the user name and password. I decided to re-format and try again but I could not re-format the disk. It would not do it in Windows 2000 or with Partition Magic. It only was able to see about 46 GB of NFTS.
I bought another disk and found a proper copy of Ubuntu which eventually I manged to load. I find that the mouse and some of the other properties of the software are a bit slow compared to Windows. Should I persist with this Ubuntu or would one of the other Linux programs be more compatible with my system. I was thinking Mandrake or Red Hat or even trying Suse 10 again. Any comments would be very welcome as I am still learning.
Hi Grenage I have set the mouse on fast movement just like in Windows but when I move it in Ubuntu it seems to slow when I am moving it. There does not seem to be any consistency. I noticed it when I played one of the card games that comes with it.
In my previous entry I mentioned the problem with Suse and my hard drive. Do you know why I can not format the disk?
I have just obtained Suse 10.2 and loaded it but when it asked for Login and Password it came up failed. Except for this it appears to have loaded easier than Ubuntu so I may carry on with it if I can get into the system.
Trying to install linux on a dell poweredge 6450, i found that Ubuntu was the one that worked the best because the installation kernel had the drivers i needed, Usually Ubuntu is one of the easiest to get up and running, which is weird that you are having problems. I just put FC6 on a comp at home, and like it so far.
i have moved the mouse sensitivity to zero and the mouse now works fine. I will now try Ubuntu and see how I get on. Thanks to all that have given their advice.
