hey i am new to linux and i was wondering which ver of linux would be good for me to start off with...
BRODIE

yes because no matter how many times the question is asked, the answer always turns out to be Red Hat.

Until someone comes along and rescues you from the Matrix, takes you to their ship, and shows you the wonders of Debian ;-)

Neo runs Debian. Shouldn't you?

The next big sucking sound you hear will be all those X M$ sufferers putting on the big red fedora.

I have to be honest, getting ready to reboot, burn a redhat 9 .iso and try it out to see what I've been 'missing'. That, and I want to try out this Ximian 2.0 desktop and it only has eyes for Redhat and Suse. Yeesh.

I would go for RedHat, its simple yet powerful =P

I have to say, Redhat 9 is pretty smooth looking. Install went fine, except that I _had_ to have all 3 CDs (used to only needing the first of the Mandrake's). This Ximian Desktop 2 is pretty nifty. I could see my dad being able to sit down and do some Linuxing with it.

But Alfred E. Neuman still runs Mandrake, so it must be better ;-)

I'd suggest Red Hat, I found it the easiest to pick up on.

okay, but could anyone please tell me where to get RedHat 9 for FREE?

And what is the difference between the three versions offered at RedHat's official website?

Ah yes. I surmise we are of one accord. From hence, when one beckons unto us and bidst us "pray tell me O' knowlegable sirs, which is the fairest of distros in the realm?". We shall harken unto him as many yet with one voice and proclaim "It is Red Hat you seek. Go ye therefore and pluck it from the internet vine and taste the sweet nectar of its power".

Really, redhat?

But then you want to install something and wish you'd learned debian instead.

apt-get install me a sandwich while you do the work

Ah yes, skiflyer, Debianers can whip out the apt on Redhatters, that's true. But be warned, the Fedora of the redhat orphans now boasts apt-ability ;-)

Yes, apt kicks rpm's butt. I favored Mandrake for the longest time over Redhat for it's 'urpmi' scripts that made it behave just like apt (grok'd all the dependancies and stuff for you). I haven't tried out apt (there's also something called 'yum') in Fedora yet, but if it's apt, it's gotta be good!

This Redhat 9 plus Ximian Desktop 2 is slick. My boss will be using it soon (and he's no power-user!). I'd be afraid to sit him in front of the Debian server. He'd blow a gasket :)

Yup, fedora does apt and yum. It is not a good system on which to hone your trouble shooting skills however since everything seems to work the first time every time.

Speaking of Ximian desktop. How do I get it? I went over the Ximian website but i think it supports downloading though Linux only. I cant find any RPMs. I am running Redhat 9 ;)
