I have had the most frustrating exp with NBU 4.5 DC. FP3 When it works it works well, but that’s the caveat "When it Works" Here's a rundown of my latest fiasco.... If some one could tell me if I'm just fighting a Bad release?

Environment is as follows:
Sun 480R 4Way 16GB Mem
Netbackup 4.5 DC FP3 as Base Install
STK L700e 6x9940B SAN Attached Tape Drives
8 SSO - SAN Media Manager - All work great except one, which is dog slow (Event with multiple streams etc....)

9/5/2003

19:00
Offsite Vault Duplications Still Running - Had to kill - using tape drives for nightly backups
Put in Veritas support ticket for dup process being too slow.
Dup job not ending... Multiple Req to end Dup Job
Stopped all NBU Processes / The Re-Started NBU Processes
Dup Jobs Still Showing Active
20:30
Dup Jobs still showing active
No Daily Backups Being Submitted
Tried Cancel Same Active Dup Jobs.
Rebooted Backup Server
21:00
One Dup Job Still Active???? Same PID
No Daily Backups Being Submitted
Submitted Backup Jobs Manually
Sitting Active

22:00 only one backup job running.
All Other Jobs Sitting Active for 20-3-min

22:30 All Active Jobs waiting for Tape Mounts
Looked at Drive Status (Gui and CMD Line) All Up But only one Tape Mounted
Tried Robtest (cmd line Robot Control Program)
Robtest Stated, "No locally-controlled robots with test utilities are configured"

23:00 looked at memstg1 storage unit properties
No Robot Device File for Robot Control Arm ... mmm there was one for the past 3 weeks that was working
Re-pointed the memstg1 storage unit to the robot device file.
Tapes are being mounted!!!!!

23:30 Submitted rest of backup jobs - Scheduler not kicking in jobs. Sched has been working...

9/6/2003

5:30AM manually submitted jobs complete!
Memm1bfile03 SAN Backup still running slow.... 1MBS
Killed Memm1bfile03 SAN Based backup job
Re-pointed SAN based memm1bfile03 backup to a LAN Based backup
Manually kicked off LAN based memm1bfile03 backup to memstg1 storage unit
Starting to see 5 mps streams of 2-5mbs Transfers
Memm1bfile03 LAN based backup has now slowed to 1-300kps

We don't use vault, but except that our installation is stable.
We use FP5 on master and media server, and the clients use GA, FP3, FP4 and FP3

Thank you for the response. Just thought maybe some would say "Hey! FP? Is much more stable. Vault is soooo slow, going to look in to the duplicate scripts.

Regards,

Charles

We had a specific error in FP4 regarding the library control on the L-series libraries from StorageTek, but that was fixed in FP5.
I realy don't remember anything else.
But we are an Windows only shop

Charles,

I have no experience with Vault so don't know if this applies. We run manually scripted bpduplicates.

If your backups are multi-plexed, make sure you use the -mpx parameter in your duplicate command. (assuming you don't mind you duplicates being mpx'ed).
