I'm asking this question because I've been using 'PHP expert editor' recentley and was quite pleased with the results. The trial period ran out about 2 weeks ago and I've been trying to find independant info on other programs, before handing over my green (only $35, but hey, look after the pennies right!). Since I've stopped using it, I've found it hard to spot very basic errors.

Any comments you have about these type of programs would be useful. Thanks.

NOTEPAD! but seriously though, I use AEdiX which suits my purposes fine and is free. has fair syntax highlighting for various languages

Try Googling for 'phped 2.96'. This is the last freeware version before it became a commercial product for nusphere.com

PHPEd does syntax highlighting, debugging, and can make live connections to FTP servers.

Why is everyone in this forum responding to me as picklefish?

I use TextPad with the php/html4 add-inn for syntax highlighting.
(ok i have about a billion other add-ins too :))

I use vi or nano (linux) and notepad+ on windows. No highlighting at all... maybe I should look around for one myself...

I use TopStyle Pro 3 on Windows XP (highlighting, preview if you have a local web server running, also does CSS and HTML), vi on UN*X systems, and the standard editor on VMS.

I have also used wordpad and VIM on Windows to do quick edits.

I used emacs, and sleipnir wrote a FAQ on the topic a few months ago... might go there for some more options/reasons.
