hi,

i want to buy some new components again. i decided for
a pentium 4 as cpu but i have no clue of all these chipsets.

i think a board with a i845pe-chipset (e.g. asus p4pe) would
be good. but what kind of ddr-ram can i / should i use?
333 fsb, 400 fsb.... ?

can you recommend some boards/chipsets and memory-types? patrick.metz@epost.de

If you're going with DDR, go with DDR 333 CL 2 (a.k.a CAS 2) if possible. DDR 400 has been known to have problems in some chipsets and shows hardly any improvement over DDR 333.

There will soon be many chipsets from Intel and Via that will support Dual-DDR @ 800MHz memory bus and higher (if you can wait). Otherwise, websites like give good reviews on the different boards out there.

Here's one from their site:

hi cdogg,

is the DDR 333 the same as PC2700?

What do you think of the Asus-board I mentioned?
I had two Asus-boards (for pentium 2 and 3) in the past
and they have been pretty stable...

thank you for your answer

I've been building PC's for a little while now, and I like to use the Intel 845E chip set. Specificly, I am sold on MSI motherboards:

This one, I've used in several Windows desktops, and Unix webservers:

I am not too fond on the 850E chipset, so I don't recommend that one.

However stablity marks high with me and the 845E chipset. The down side to this board is only supports PC-2100 DDR at it's highest. I know MSI has a PC-2700 version of this board in the 845PE chipset, but I have not build enough PC's with this board to make any conclusions.

Intel 7025 Chipset, or Granite Bay chipset supports dual DDR, or DDR used in PAIRS. This seems to be the trend in motherboards. This is only available for Intel processors and to some extent on thE Nforce2 chipset for AMD processors. VIA may go this route for AMD Processors. By then there may be a new type of DDR RAM available (DDR2 ? ).

The drawback is the Granite Bay motherboards seem real expensive. At over $200.00 for the Asus Version, I can not see myself buying one anytime soon. The Asus P4PE seems a lot better price. Asus is making a limited edition P4PE they call Black Pearl that comes with a USB Pen Drive, but it just costs more.

If you buy RAM, needing DDR in Pairs could be something to think about if you upgrade often. On the Horizon is a looming 800mhz CPU BUS for Intel Chipsets and possible release of the AMD Hammer. Microsoft might just make a full 64 bit OS someday, but I would wait till it comes out and someone has a chance to beta test it before I got my hopes up. They might have something out now for a 64 bit processor, but it is probably aimed at server markets.

It stands to reason the more powerful the processors the more memory we will need to be competitive. I have heard rumors of 1GB Cache memory for processors being planned.

You might go to some websites like
They have some info from the most recent Intel Developers Forum. I recently saw an article saying Sega is on the chopping block and is up for sale and Microsoft might be interested. That is scary! If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

The Asus P4PE can handle PC 2700 memory... at least that is
what Asus says on their webside.

I think i will go for the Asus P4P3 Black Perl... I want
to do some modding with my case and a black board would
look very cool... and I want that memory-stick! ;-)

Thanks for all your answers.

... oh, forget about the black pearl edition!

it has no onboard-features at all !!! [mad] patrick.metz@epost.de
