Hi All,

Hopefully some body can give me some advice.

I have just been ask to setup a small domain with around 10-15 PCs and 1 server running win2003, this will run an sage act database, pst files, home areas and shared files. The server is over kill in the hardware dept but at least future proof for a while. ML150 proliant, 2 duo core processors and 4GB of RAM.

My questions are should I purchase a AV package to be installed on the server to push out to clients or phuchase indidual packages for each PC. I wanted advice on network/server impact. It seems from the management point of view best on the server. The second question is what package
have you found best, I was thinking of F-secure or AvG.

Any help would be most appreciated as this is my first Job if you like and need to get things right the first time round.

James

Id go with avg. If you want to see how an antivirus is doing , look at this site below. It compares most of the top known antiviruses.

The most recent test here

My personal favorite is antivir but im not sure if they have one for business.

is their site.

Just realized they block all links except the one to the site. So to see how antiviruses are doing, go to comparitives on the page then scroll down to the newest date with a link beside it. That will show you the results.

I've heard good stuff about AVG as well...

I've been managing a Symantec AV Corporate Edition shop for 6 years now. I can safely say that this product has kept my company safe, and is very reliable. Every now and then there would be an issue with an updated client, but they were resolved quickly.

In the past I've used Symantec corp ed., Sohpos and am currently using ESET's NOD32 Enterprise without any problems although they are about to release a new version of the admin server v2 and NOD32 client v3, so far I've been happy with ESET.

I've never had anything but trouble with AVG. I've had it kill a server (refuse to boot) after install, and I've had it suck 100% of the CPU forever the moment from boot.

Trend Micro here. I believe it is set up to push definitions daily from the server to workstations.

Trend micro I love however I have one thing that bugs me about them. I do not like any antivirus program that forces you to remove any other protection on your computer. Reason being, I do not believe that one program can catch everything. I use housecall all the time by them but that is one of the reasons I do not like their antivirus.

NOD32 user here for several years. I wouldn't change for anything. Best on the market.

I noticed there seemed to be no reviews of corporate editions on the comparatives site only home versions it seemed.. no Symantec corporate of Trend Micro at all.. im trying to do research on trend micro.. lots of things look good about it.. currently on Symantec Corporate.I like that Trend micro has web-based admin page.

Well as far as corporate comparisons ive never really tested them. As far as actual home user antiviruses, symantec is my least favorite but that is just my OPINION so I do not mean any offense to anyone who does like it. I put opinion in caps as I do not want to make anyone mad nor start world war 3. Just simply giving my opinion.

Trend Micro has missed 2 virii and allowed them to propagate through the corporate network (9500 PCs) in the last 3 months.

I agree with Symantec being a bad choice for home PC use, but so far IN my experience they are the best corporate 1 out there so far...no big problems and I have it set to hit their FTP site for the intelligent updates a few times a day.... so as soon as they update their definitions, our office is up-to-date against newly released threats..For my home computer I have had no problem with the free AVG...Just upgraded servers at the office and was looking to move the symnantec COrporate server edition to the new 1 and am also needing to renew to symantec's maintenance so was thinking about switching to Trend.. but 2 missed Virii in the last 3 months is not good news..

Hi Every 1,

Good responses. I have decided to go for F-Secure Small Business AV, no 1 gave any info on this product, but 2 colleges I know have just purchased this AV + I have heard Government agencies use it too.

Hope I have made the right choice???

It arrives on Thursday.

All the best,
J.
