Good morning all. I find myself in a position I have never been in before. After working on Avaya/Lucent/AT&T stuff for over 26 years I am getting pressure to learn our new MM setup. It seems we have new upper level management that wants "an expert" on MM. Normally I learn as I go and usually become pretty good on everything we have.

As most of you know with all the comes with a telecomm unit. You become good at most over time but never have enough time with one product to become what I call an expert. But I am sure you guys have never heard or experienced this before. [smile]

Ok now that the semi rant is over (thanks BTW) where would be a good starting place? I was pretty much told if they need to bring in "an expert" let them know. I think good luck on that one..

Thanks for the help guys..

if you need to come up to speed you need someone to come to your site and go over the system with you. for at least a day or 2.

You can go to class or take the online courses but you know how they are.

We do it and some other BP's do it i think but it is not what you would call cheap.

Thanks Ken, am yeah I know what you mean. Since I posted this I talked with an MM installer for Carousel. He recommend a class with Carousel that has an ex-Avaya guy as the trainer. It's not cheap either. I sent this back up and let them know that If I needed to be up to speed sooner than later. I would attend this class in its first opening. I haven't heard anything back...

I'll also keep having someone come in and spend time with me in mind. But with 18,000 network connections and 7000 phone lines to take care of, it's kind of busy in my office. It would be imposable to learn anything like that. Thats why I am in this position to begin with. Lack of time to spend on any one thing..

Thanks again Ken.

The best thing you can do is beat the MM servers to death. Then go out and get a product that works, and that the manufacturer will support. You can then become an expert on a decent system.

LOL I am coming to that conclusion. Although I am assured this works if properly setup. Honestly It does work and I haven't had any real problems yet. I just need to know how to fix it when that day arrives.

You have to remember I am an old guy coming from Definity Audix, Audix, Intuity Audix, so the jump to MM hasn't been pleasant to say the least. But I catch on pretty quick. [wink]

mikeydidit...
I am assuming you have some MM experience behind you. The biggest differences in 5.2 or the 5.x systems is the introduction of the WebLM server / Licensing format and the SAL (Secure Access Link) to replace the modems. Also if you have customers that have used the free software Mailbox Manager then they won't have this tool with 5.1 or 5.2 since the Vendor Unimax changed their format and now this is a purchasable software Second Nature.

The hardware has been End of Sales from the S8730, S8800 to the HP DL3xx and it also introduced the System Platform MM that is a new 'beast' in itself and the documentation used to install it is in several docs which can be confusing.

The MSS backend databases haven't changed too much so anything you have learned in the previous versions from 1.0 - 5.2 still works in troubleshooting.

In the Exchange backend the biggest problem I have seen is with the permissions, if not followed by the customer, hoses the installation. The Exchange Management tools also don't work on Windows 7 OS or 64-bit machines.

If you have access to the business partner portal at Avaya there are some knowledge transfer slides available. You could also try reviewing a training binder from one of the classes.

Hope this helps

Ken I appreciate the reply. I really do not have any experience with the MM line of products. Being a customer I have only really got to work with the things that we have bought and I have maintained through the years. This had been the Audix line, so MM is all new to me.

The Exchange integration was the worst part of our install. Being within a state system, their are different levels of permissions at various places. I had to get my permissions from another agency in another part of the state basically. Made it a pain for our installer and now for us when we have problems..

I would love to get my hands on some of the knowledge transfer slides, but I think the odds are slim.. But if you run across anything like this that would help, I would appreciate it.

I was approved to go to the Carousel classes last week. Now it looks like it will be after the first of the year before they have another one available. I'll have to wing it until then..

In addition to what Ken and Karen have mentioned I would hope (and recommend) you have some kind of support from Avaya directly or some Avaya Business Partner for your system that you can call with general questions even if you didn't have issues at the time.

Eric, the equipment is fairly new and is covered under our maintenance with Carousel. I am not a customer that calls for help very often (if at all), but I did on one issue that has come up with MM.

I'm not sure I came away with as many answers as I did questions.. LOL I am sure you have been there before as we all have from time to time.

Thanks for the reply..
