Where to start 4

I have a reformatted laptop that has just a version of Caldera DR-DOS 7.03 running. I would like to install XP pro on the laptop but when i insert the Cd, there is no response. I tried to locate the cd drive thru the command prompt but am unable to proceed. Any idea on how to go about??

The xp xd is bootable. Go into your bios and set your cd rom to be the first boot device. Restart the computer with the xp cd in the drive and follow the prompts.

Its great to hear from someone...however, I have no idea of how to change settings to boot up from the Cd.

Hey neomorpheus,

First, U'll need to get the make, model#, etc of the laptop that U reformatted.

2nd, Take that info & search the manufacture's website.
3rd, when you're search is successful (ie: U found a User's guide/manual for YOUR specific laptop)

4th, view the info that U've obtained & C if there's any key combinations that must be pressed during the POST process. If & when U've found the key combination that'll let U enter setup then HALF the battle's done.

5th, some COMMON key(s) combination(s) that'll let U enter CMOS SETUP / BIOS are the: "DEL" key, "F1" key, Ctrl & ESC;
However, some manufacturers have their own SPECIFIC keys 2 do this. It all depends...Chao!!!

The BIOS setup is something you go into BEFORE you get to any OS.

If it's a Dell try F2 if a Compaq try F10 to enter BIOS at bootup. On most Dells you'll see a 'Hit F2 to enter setup' that's what you want to do.

Then in the BIOS setup you'll see mention of 'Boot Order' that's what you want to change. Should be something like:
CD ROM
Floppy Disk
Hard Drive

That's the order, names might be variations.

I have a Toshiba Tecra 8000 Model PAT 800U-KH71. I looked up support.toshiba to get info abt the system....but nothing that mentions how to get into the BIOS. Any suggestions?

Reboot the computer and watch the post screen carefully - on most computers that I know it should tell you which key to use to get into setup. Sometimes though the message is very quick but normally it would be one of the ones posted above - if you can't see a message I would try the above keys one at a time - if it's not the right one it won't hurt. Power up and tap the key about 2 times a second - sometimes you need to be very quick.

This is probably the procedure - I've never seen one so complicated before!

1.Power up computer from off condition with ESC key depressed. Unit will display "Check system. Then press the (F1) key"
2.Release the ESC key, press the F1 key. This will put the unit into the BIOS setup screen

Got into the BIOS and changed setting to start the CD as the first boot device..... hoever, it doesnt seem to read my XP CD and goes to the next boot device(My HDD) and starts the DOS OS.

However, on my desktop, the XP cd starts automatically. Is there a way to be able to go into DOS and change dir to D: or whatever and execute the setup.exe??

Just a small clarifiaction:

When I said desktop in my earlier post, i meant my other desktop PC recognises the XP CD instantaneously. My XP cd is not being recognised by the laptop and Caldera DOS is loaded from the HDD. Is there a way to point to the CDROM and run setup.exe?

A Tecra 8000 is supposed to boot from CD.
Either you did something wrong or the cd is not bootable.
When you said it starts automatically on your desktop, do you mean autostart when inserted or boot when powers on with th cd in it?

If you want to do it manually:
Goto

http://www.bootdisk.com/original.htm

and choose the Windows 98 OEM or Win XP disks (4).
Boot with the diskette(s).
It should load the CD driver (normally D
If you don't need anything on C: anymore, and I guess you don't, just goto D: (the CD_ and type setup.

When prompted, delete all partitions on your c: drive and create a new one (full).
Press enter en install XP (pref on NTFS). The solution is out there.

You say it goes right to boot from the hard disk. I would be sure to watch the boot on power up carefully.

Watch for a 'Press any key to Boot from CD' when the computer powers up. I've seen people miss that.

AND Be sure you really did save your BIOS settings. I've seen users think they did, but didn't.

The Tecra should boot from CD as marcs41 said.

I was able to jumpstart my laptop to read the CD and was able to ge the installation process started. However, when the files are being copied to the hard drive, i get errors for some files not being found. I was forced to skip looking for this file to continue with the setup OR Exit the set up totally. I contnued with setup by skipping the file.

When the files were all loaded, the XP setup screen as it shows when upgrading loads up. Unfortunately, I get a fatal error message and the setup is incomplete. I couldnt grab the error message and hence am reinstalling XP again.

Has anyone come across somethig like this before. Could you please advice.

are you Using a copy of XP
some CD drives have issues with CDR media.
Yes, I have had the same problems. But, only with drives unable to fully read CDRs.

In some copies of XP it's control.man that is corrupt. It's only a text file but there are reports that even on some XP CD's right out of the box it's bad - not even copied CD's. If that is the problem then you can use a text editor to change it. When setup completes and Windows restarts but you keep getting a fatal error as it reboots then you need to do the following:-

Copy \I386 directory to the harddrive, get a copy of Controls.man from a working CD-ROM (X:\I386\ASMS\6000\MSFT\WINDOWS\COMMON\CONTROLS)and place in the copied directory.

Controls.man is a XML file responsible for registring the common controls in Windows (e.g. buttons, message boxes)

Looks like I ended up with a bad copy of the CD that wouldnt boot. I finally had to make a new BOOT Cd using Nero and it worked great. Finally after almost 24 hours of playing around, i was able to install XP successfully.

Nope...thats not the end of my adventure.... I am presently trying to set up a wireless PCI card and it freezes my laptop everytime. THE Wirelss Access Point connected thru my desktop is great. Check this link out...
