We have less than 300 user at central office, and it is broken up into 4 to five subnets. Since we placed the 6509 on a segment with less than 170 users - 5 VLANDS. We have gotten a high number of errors and we are also bumping all users to full duplex / 100. I notice a high number of runts and mis alien packets with some users error rate in the billions. What is going on here? When we drop the user back to half/100 or 10/half the errors decrase. How can I use the sniffe to see what is going on?

Thanks

Dear Jkeeper,

it's driver issue you are talking about.
HalfDuplex is nowadays bit too 'slow' for today's devices
and Alignment Errors are occuring that's why, so answer is FullDuplex. But not without testing, every single driver or driver version has to be tested in every single environment (= device & OS) before use. There are all too much nic's with drivers which are not working properly in FullDuuplex mode even though version make's it possible to choose.
Summary, test FD before use and if problems occur update driver or replace nic the one which works this certain environment.

OK..

Thank you all for your answers. I do think this is a driver issue. I also do not think that the 6509 per say, is to much switch for this segment. I thank all for their help.

Sounds like a duplex problem to me also.

Have you ensured both ends are hardcoded as far as duplex/speed are concerned. I've seen a number of situations were autodetect spits out errors as you've indicated.
