Where to look up commands/syntax

Hello,
I am new to Access and have been learning from this forum. However, when someone suggests to have a look at a certain property, or command with a given argument, I haven't figured out where to look????
I have a book that is 1000 pages, but I can't find a simple COMMAND in here!
And I find the Microsoft Access 2003 Help facility to be quite lacking.
Can someone help and tell me where to find things?
It's hard being a beginner again,and I'm not handling it well!

Hi lorirobn,

You may be better served searching the help "system" for "functions" or "functions reference".

This will give you the functions that already exist in the application. Most functions take one or more arguments that you pass to them in order to achieve a desired result.

All the best with the learning curve!

One thing I can suggest if you haven't already is to read the many great FAQ's & the top of each forum.

Hi Peter,

Are you referring to Visual Basic 'functions'?

When I attempt to look up an Access function (for example, even something simple like how to create a List Box from my own values without creating a table), I usually get from 10-15 possibilities, all with a lot of words and descriptions. I often just want to clearly and concisely know how to use a function, and their results often don't produce the answer I want. (and I waste a lot of time in the interim). I can't figure out the simplest things.

Functions are what I want, but I'm wondering if you mean Access or VB, or doesn't it matter?

During my learning process, whenever someone said look up something, I used the search command in Tek-Tips and just read other people's threads. I usually find what I'm looking for.

I usually find replies that say look up a certain function usually do so because it has been covered in several threads already.

When all else fails, I google it.

Generally, I find the Help function in the Visual Basic Editor more useful.

Thank you SOOO much. I can't believe how much more helpful the Visual Basic Editor Help is!! It gives me just what I have been looking for: clear, concise answers. I've already figured a couple of things out that I couldn't do before.

I felt the need to add to your orginal comment about finding answers. You should see the library I have, almost every current book on Access. I even took to spending time, lots of it, to reading most of them as though they were a novel. Though I now have a very good understanding of Access and work in it a lot, your comments continue to be true. Where are the authors who write for the practical application of Access. There are so many wonderful things access does, you only need to go through hell to get to them. The best answers I ever received I got here in the forum, and reading previous postings. The people who help us here are by far the best in the world.
