I need to do a couple of cable jobs (cat5 runs)
for 2 different outfits, I do not know what to charge
On one request its a 5 story office building with 3 offices per floor there are existing drops at some of these offices
but basically one drop per office is requested. The Comm
room is somewhere on the third floor, that is all the info I have on that job.
The second request follows:
Office space is 1900SqFt, with 26 points..
> It is raised floor model. We are looking for 2 CAT5e at each desks...So in
> total 26points of Cat5e.
I have not seen either site, but I was wondering if any one would have a ball park figure or know of a site where I can get prices to charge for cabling jos like the ones above.

Thanks GB

I charge an hourly rate with a minimum per run. Our rate may seem high, but every run is tested and double tested.

I charge based off of my hourly estimate, as well as an estimate of materials. Although estimate truly means that the price could go higher or lower, I usually try to stick to my estimate, be it that I eat some... or get a little extra.

Come up with an hourly rate that you think is fair... and then analyze on top of that how much materials will cost. That should give you a ball park figure.

Things like raised floors and whatnot can make your job easier, so that might cut off some time, etc.

If you're going to charge as much as any other contractor might, make sure to give the customer a full explanation of what your install means (ie. end to end testing, standards compliant, manufacturer compliant, etc.)

While a job may only be two or three runs of Cat5e sometimes... the actual work you have to perform is considerably more than let's say another job.

Another thing to try, if it's all new construction, and fairly similar, is to charge a per drop fee. Ie. X amount of dollars per drop, which will give you the total you're looking for (Again based off of materials and time) but this estimate may be easier for the customer to justify.

There's a lot to feel out there.

I have done quite a few jobs by the length of cable, per cable. Depending on the job of course you can sometime get a $75-$125 per foot per cable.

For rough estimating, particularly site-unseen, I'll go $125-150 per drop. But that is just to get the ball rolling untill a real site survey can be completed to see what extra challenges might show up. When possible, I'd just as soon go T&M, and go from there.
