I had an old machine with a S3 savage4 vga adaptor in
it. The other day I scratch out the old OS and tried
window 2k professional on it. After I installed the OS,
I tried to change the vga driver but find out I only had
drivers for winNT. Anyway I install it and there comes
trouble. After the ususal desktop is brought up, the
system will crash, giving me a screen (you know, the
failure screen of W2K) saying something went wrong.
It would only stay for about half a second and I was
never able to read it. If I start with a normal VGA
driver (provided by the system when setup) the system
can stay. So it must be the display driver. I tried login
to the Taiwan manufacturer's site but its gone. Next I tried
but it directs me to something else. Where
on earth can I find those drivers. Please don't tell me
changing my display adaptor. The old machine is slow
and I am keeping it just for some testing purpose (it is a
celeron 333 on an Asus P2B mobo) Any help will be much
appreciated.

For S3 drivers, go here my friend.

If you still have trouble, post again and I will look for you, I have thousands of drivers here.

Good luck to you. I pledge to share any information I have and advise to the best of my knowledge based on the information provided.

KimberTech,

Thanks for your help, but I just don't know what happen.
I tried the site and have the drivers download. Still it fail
just like before. Then I found there is a driver that comes
with W2K which I have missed before and I tried installing
that driver, but still I failed. Don't know what to do next.

BTW the chip is S3 86c362 Trio 3D/2X and the original
Taiwan manufacturer is Viewtop. If the original driver
from W2K don't work, I don't know what to do with it.
It works fine with W98se!!!!!!(using the Viewtop drivers)

S3 were bought out by VIA. But the older drivers weren't there. Only three or four were there. But two of them are Savage chips.

A bit of a shock.. Hope you can find someone with the install CD.

You need to completely uninstall and remove the video adapter in your operating system, and then try the install.

You may just have too many different things trying to load.
Which Win2k are you running? Pro? Me? Post and I will see if I can find out anything for you.

I pledge to share any information I have and advise to the best of my knowledge based on the information provided.

Hi KimberTech,

Sorry, don't see what you mean when you say

"completely uninstall and remove the video adapter in
your operating system, and then try the install."

I can switch back to vga but 'removing the video adaptor'
means ?? You probably mean the drivers right? How?

I am running W2K Pro /w nothing in it yet. Bare as a
new born for it was only freshly install. Not even my
extra pci hdd controller driver.

this card is nasty i had to use it too and it drove me crazy sometimes..
Diamond sold it too as a "Speedstar A90" (the 16mb agp version that is) and the driver NAME for s3 was 395, this identifies your card in their driver sites..use the utility called S3id.exe ( to probe the vendor ID for the card to help you identify it.. you may want to run this in a dos-window.(there is also a method for probing with de debugger described)
The win2kpro windows publisher driver does not support openGL so the usefullness of that you may judge for yourself..
the best driver finally was one called 395 bitflip..
weird name good work.. also the xp cd has better (while more recent) drivers that may support your card better too..
good luck (and if nothing helps disable onboard sound or take your creative soundcard out (swap it to another slot) it may bite the s3 card too..

had a sight with drivers for S3 products. I have a Sparkle S3 Virge 3D DX that I purchased a couple years ago and their driver disk had a wide range of S3 drivers in it. They also have a download. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.
