where to download the full service packs?

i'm going to be leaving for abroad with a laptop soon, and was wondering if there was a way to download the full Win2k service packs (1 and 2)? i won't have any sort of broadband connection abroad, so if i have to format/reinstall windows (god forbid), i certainly don't want to have to reinstall the service packs over a modem connection!!! is the only way to do this for me to download the "network install"? wouldn't that install services on my computer that i don't need?

nope, far as i could tell, the best i could do through that search was go to

which is the same as before the "express installation" is just a small executable file that will download the actual fixes from the net only when i start the program. not good when i have to do this over a modem!!!!! the network installation, as far as i know (i could be wrong), will install **everything** - including services i DON'T need or want (thus taking up system resources or creating more security risk by enabling services i don't use.)

@#$)&*)!!, they do this with IE service packs too. they only let you download at the time of install. they won't let you download the whole thing at once. MICRO$HAFT $CREW$ U$ AGAIN

thanks. is that the network install though? or was i wrong in the first place concerning the network install, that it would install everything, including features and services i don't want or need?

what about service pack 1? (or wait, does SP2 include SP1?)

what about IE service packs?

Actually if you download the NETWORK version that is the entire SP2 install. This is the version you want. Once you download it you will have the full install. James Collins

Nope it will check your system then install what is needed. You will of course not have a choice but there really is not much in the way of issues for non networked PCs. I use this version to install ALL Win2K PC's both networked and non networked. James Collins

For IE when you down load ALL updates you need for IE and they are installed, There is a folder on your Hard drive called "Windows Update Files" This is the install folder you need. Put the entire contents on cd and you have the IE updates. James Collins

yes, i was suspecting that might be the answer. so to confirm - if i delete previous incarnations of this folder, and install IE5.5 SP2 via Windows Update, the complete setup files will be contained in that folder?

It only retains (the IE folder) what you install. If you want all of IE5.5 + Service Packs you will need to install them. James Collins

Bottom line, tai...

If you want a service-pack..you're gonna have to download at least 100 MB of data. If you want it on disk - you must order one (& pay shipping). If you cant do that - you don't get a service pack.

If you connect to a network, your netword admin will be able to provide you with the servicve pack - yough i don't see how you'd need it.

i've got a broadband connection, so downloading 100mb+ isn't a problem for me right now.

if you'd read my original messages, you'd know that i wanted the full service pack because i'm going to be spending considerable time abroad, and the only connection i will have is an intermittent 28.8K modem. in the case that i need to format/reinstall win2k on my laptop, i DO NOT want to download the service packs over the modem. i figure that while i still have a broadband connection now, i should download the upgrades/patches for all my software. i would burn them to cd myself.

i don't want to give the cash for a silly cd from micro$haft. they've gotten enough of my money as it is. especially since all they had to do was offer a sensible full download option for power users.

As I stated before. If you download the network install version you will have the entire SP2. That does not mean you have to be on a network It is the full SP2 for admins who want to deploy the Service Pack. It will do what you want it to, and thats upgrade to SP2. James Collins

since you have the broadband connection - the link to the full .exe is your best bet. I was under the impression you had a regular modem, and my other suggestion was that you dont technically "need" SP2 to do your work - and that leaving it off until you get back would be another option.

But - it sounds like you got it all squared away.
