I want to watch avi files, so search, looks like I need to install mplayer.
I read that I need to install the codec, the fonts and the skin. On the Mplayer website, there are rpm for Redhat 7/8 and fedora1/2, but no rmp for Redhat 9? What shall I do?

Try installing mplayer using apt (
apt-get -y install mplayer

another option to mplayer is the xine media center... it's updated frequently, and supports tons of codecs... also plays music files if i remember right, anyway, if you can't get mplayer to work, the xine source is readily available, and as long as you have required libs, it doesn't matter what distro you use :)
