I regularly (daily) get spam in my hotmail account, goes to the junk mail folder etc. I do not download the hotmail messages on my computer.
But to day I was scared of the lack of professionalism of M$.

Imagine I got an e-mail from:
my_own_account@hotmail.com to my_own_account@hotmail.com

about some idiot site that is willing to lend me money.

Do I have to block myself out?

In the past you could forward this sh... to Microsoft to notify them, but it looks like they have de-activated this option. Probably their computers couldn't handle the load anymore. Steven van Els

To answer the question which is the subject of this thread: "To hell in a handbasket".

Unfortunately, since Hotmail to my knowledge only has a web interface, you can't view the headers of an SMTP message to find out where the message really came from.

Anybody can tinker with the From: and To: headers. ______________________________________________________________________

For me, it's not the spam that bothers me (actually the main reason I have a hotmail account is to use messanger and I have the spamblocking up to the max. The main spam that is now coming through is all from the Hotmail staff trying to get me to buy their new services... I believe todays message was something to the effect of "why not buy some of our space to start off your school year?" First of all, I'm not a studant, second of all, if I was not convinced by the first message what are the chances that the one hundered and first message will make me decide to sign up for their new pay feature?

So, I guess sending an email to the administrators of Hotmail, the gist of which is, "Shut the [insert invective here] up!" is out of the question? ______________________________________________________________________

M$ are sneaky and have introduced a series of check boxes to your hotmail profile that basically gives them carte balnch to distribute your mail to whomever they wish. You can find out what these are by doing the following:

***
signing into your account.
click "options" (it is to the right of the tabs).
choose "personal profile" from the list.
scroll down and you will see three check boxes:

-> Share my e-mail address
-> Share my first and last names
-> Share my other registration information.

what has happened is that if you signed up before a certain date this year, M$ have automatically checked these boxes for you, and chances are the damage has already been done. You can uncheck the boxes now but your address would have been knwn for a while and propogated to mailing lists.

Recommendation:

Forget about your existing account and open a new one - but when you sign up make sure you uncheck the three boxes.

I have two addresses, my old one which now regularly receive at least 20-30 spam messages a day (mainly porn adverts) and a new one where I recently registered and unchecked the boxes - my new account hasn't received a single spam in the three months I have had it.

It really does take the piss that M$ have deliberately made this change to the existing accounts and not made it public about these boxes.

P.S - is it true that if you sign into MSN they have a utility which automatically downloads your registry data (including software keys and the like)??

they can go right ahead and try... I couldn't care less if they want to see that I have a registered version of Delphi, and win2k/office2k on my work machine, and from home I do all my browsing from a linux box... Good luck reading the registry there

I think pipk gave you about all the advice anyone can in order to avoid spam. The only other thing I can think of is to never use your account to sign up for anything online, whether it be shopping, an email newsletter, or anything else you can think of. I'm moving to Japan for a year, minus a computer, so I won't have the time to sort through the nearly 50 spam messages I receive a day trying to find the real messages from people back home. So I created a new account for people to email me at. If I feel the need to ever sign up for anything or make my email address available online again, I'll use my old address, since it's long past the point of no return.

-cheese 47 is a magical number. 47 plus 2 equals 49. 47 times 2 equals 94. 49 and 94. 94 and 49. Relationship between 47 and 2: it's magic.

Lol...

I would love to pirate some software for my Linux box, alas, I keep running into issues like: "This application is Freeware" or "You may freely copy this program to all your friends."

There just seems to be no good way to pirate Linux software.
