i'm planning to install a mail server (ms xchange 2000) and i need some guides.

presently, i have a win2k server (dc), a dsl connection, a dlink router, dhcp on the win2k server, and about 50 win2k clients, a registered domain name (
internet connections pass through the router

server ip - 192.168.0.200
sub - 255.255.255.0
gateway - 192.168.0.1
dns - 202.78.97.2
192.168.0.200

client network range - 192.168.10 - 192.168.0.190

i got a new pc (win2k server) where i will install the ms xchange. this is connected to the router with a static ip of 192.168.0.201. pc is connected to a router port

what configurations/details in need to do. i want our clients to use their log-on names as their email address too eg. president@company.com

thanks.

1. Fix you DNS. You're pointing [presumably] to your ISP's DNS server, 202.78.97.2. You'll need internal DNS that supports dynamic updates and srv records, probably the easiest would be AD integrated DNS on your DC.

2. An MX record, an A record, and a PTR record in the external [ISP hosted DNS] for company.com [MX] and mail.company.com or whatever you want the host name to appear to be [A and PTR].

3. The A record in the external DNS needs to point the the outside interface of the DLink, where a rule redirects port 25 to your internal mail server.

4. If the internal and external DNS names are the same, it's a vanilla install; If not, you'll have to modify the default recipient policy and set the masquarade domain.

thanks for the reply

can you help me with more specific details/instructions.

1. my present dns - 192.168.0.200 (server ip) & 202.97.78.2 (isp dns)

2. will will put these settings? on the win2k server (dc) or on my server housing the ms exchange program

3. where to do it/how

4. i used the same name (domain name) in installing my dns

Note:

if i give nslookup 192.168.0.200 (server) it give an error "can't find server name for address 192.168.0.200 Non-existend domain"

any idea
