Where did I go wrong

Hi all!

I have a very simple problem to solve regarding the setup of a VPN. Basically I have a set of computers running XP Pro at 2 different locations, both behind a Linksys router befvp44 that supports VPN.
Today I connected the routers in the VPN .. connection was successful and I was able to ping one of the machines on the other network. However I need to use some programs and files as well on that computer and I couldnt figure that out. Yes I used the search and I all was able to find was the procedure where u go to Control Panel and create a new network connection -> setup advanced and so on. Is that what I need to do to see files on the other network .. or what am I missing???

what ip addresses are you using at each site? also computer names cannot be the same.
you might want to look at the lmhost and host files add the entry's manually for each computer and remove all the other lines that are not needed.

I have static ip for the wan ... for the local net I havent assigned ip's. Thats what I am unclear about .. I am allowing the router to assign an IP from the DHCP but now I remember that I need to assign an ip thats different from that to each machine.. Rite now my settings from the properties of TCP/IP on the local connection are obtain ip automatically - do I need to change that to static and what ip address can I assign there?

The router will hand off a 192.168 ip address. If you have established a wan/vpn connection to the machine try to ping the other XP box by the ip address or the hostname. You can get the ip address on any machine by clicking on start then run. On the run line type in CMD and hit enter. This will put uou in a dos window. Type in hostname and hit enter this will display the computer name or type in ipconfig to obtain the ip address of any machine. Once you have the ip address or the computer name go to the run line on the opposite machine and type in \\192.168.X.X or whatever the ip address is or the computer name. This should allow you to connect to the machine if you are not blocking the access. You may need to share files on the other machine as well. Check this out and let me know where you stand.

I would set the dhcp to a different range than that on the otherside of the wan and use static ip addresses if you can it will help speed up the connection in the long run.
also try using cablenut its free and makes a big difference when opening documents over vpn such as word and excel.

The range is different - Location 1 uses 192.168.1.xx Location 2 uses 192.168.2.xx

Tried the \\192.168.2.xx and it works!!! I am able to see computers from both sides (I knew it was something simple). I cant enable network sharing for Program Files cause its grayed out and it says it contains files that are used by windows ... Im sure there is a way around it but for rite now I am good to go!!
