The driver for the PS/2 Mouse input was corrupted on my XP Pro system. Rather than re-install the Windows XP Pro OS over the existing system, does anyone know where I can download the driver to be able to use my mouse on a PS/2 input rather than a USB input.

Thanks in advance

Have you tried uninstalling the PS/2 mouse from Device Manager and then rebooting the computer (with PS/2 mouse connected) so XP can detect and reinstall the PS/2 mouse? If that doesn't resolve the issue another option would be to use System Restore to restore your computer back to a time before the mouse driver became corrupt. You could also go to the mouse manufacturer's website and see if they have a driver available.

your only issue would be if it was a proprietary(special) mouse as the mouse is a basic piece of equipment

The mouse is any old PS/2 Mouse.

When I test the mouse with PC Check it works without any problem. When XP Pro starts up, it doesn't work because the drivers are missing.

So that's why I need to find the drivers.

o.k. i would think microsoft would have to have drivers for download you would just have to wade thru the site for them

Hold on. Mice, don't require drivers to be manually installed. Windows should automatically install the ps2 driver it needs.

Neither Microsoft, nor the Mice Manufacturer would provide PS2 mouse drivers. Its like asking a Car manufacturer to produce a how to guide on driving a car. It is assumed when you buy a car you know how to drive. And all cars are driven on the same set of rules.

The First thing to do would be to turn off your machine and plug in the ps2 mouse, and then turn it back on. PS2 is not plug and play. On boot up Windows should then initialize the PS2 mouse correctly. But it needs to be there before you turn on the PC so it gets picked up.

If its not getting recognized, then you might need to go into Device manager and uninstall any mouse entries there. and Restart your PC.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

Ages ago I rememeber that I came across a BIOS that had an option to turn off the Serial and PS2 ports. Have a look around and see if it's disabled there.

Only the truly stupid believe they know everything.

Have you run SFC /SCANNOW on the system to replace corrupted system files?

just a "simple" thought: the mouse is supposed to be classified as a "simple" device that did not need windows drivers to operate ie:you are in safe mode with few drivers installed and the mouse works fine.i know i am going back on what i said earlier but stu made reference to the bios which is where info on mice and keyboards "should" be.

All the advice I received over the last few days has been very helpful.

I tried several of the ideas given to me, such as the Belkin mouse drivers - no help at all.

Then, in one last attempt, I removed everything except the PS/2 mouse and rebooted the PC. The PC finally found it and now all is back to normal again.

So many thanks.
