I send attachments to clients (pdf & word 2003 & others) and sometimes, they cant find them. Or, all they can see is a winmail.dat file attachment. Some of my clients are using Lotus notes and some are using a web based email service (like webmail). There seems to be no reason or pattern to this problem... however, it is real and it is getting in the way of doing business. Just the other day, I tried to send a pdf attachment and the client could not see a pdf attachment... just the win.dat attachment. I tried a Word 2003 attachment and it did not work either.

Hi scottsmith001,

I didn't realise this was still a problem in 2003. When Outlook / Exchange send an attachment with an HTML or RTF format e-mail, it is all bundled up into a file called winmail.dat. If the recipient does not have Outlook / Exchange they just can't make sense of it. It's like M$ trying to rule the world.

As far as I know, the only thing you can do is format your mail as plain text. What is needed is action at the receiving end. A Google for winmail.dat should find an unscrambler.

Enjoy,
Tony

ouch! There must be a better way. How will sending the email in Plain Text help? I understand that the formatting of the email will be lost and hyperlinks will not work... but what does that do for the attachments?

There is no way some of my customers will "Unscramble" a winmail.dat to open my attachments. They have just been frustrated and said "... just FAX it to me"..

Hi scottsmith001,

When you send the e-mail in plain text Outlook does not bundle it all up in a winmail.dat file - it sends it normally. I have no idea why!

If you want to send HTML you could attach an HTML document to a plain text (empty if you wish) e-mail.

Enjoy,
Tony
