This past week I bought a new hard drive, a 160G Segate, and used the Seagate software to partition it into 3 partitions.

I am now trying to install Windows XP and am having a problem.

I first installed XP Pro (in the 1st partition, 30Gig NTFS) and it worked fine. Then I tried to install SP2 which seemed to go ok, till it rebooted. The XP splash screen came on, with the three blue squares scrolling to the right in the rectangle in the middle of the screen. They scroll across once or twice and then stop and nothing else happens. I gave it maybe 10 minutes. I powered off and let it reboot again with the same results. I tried it a couple of more times, and the last time I waited about an hour.

I am using a SP2 CD from Microsoft, not a copy or one downloaded. It was successfully used once before to install SP2 in another computer.

I then bought a new copy of XP Pro that includes SP2. Again, I am at the point where it should be booting to XP. The XP splash screen comes on, and the three blue squares scroll to the right. They scroll across three times, and on the fourth time they stop in the middle and nothing else happens. I tried several times and even left it for over an hour.

This computer is very basic: 2.4G P4, 512M RAM, a floppy and a CD drive. No add in cards except video card. Nothing that could/should complicate an installation.

BTW, when I shut it all down and move the cables to my old drive Win '98 comes up and works fine.

Any suggestions would be more than appreciated.

I'm having the exact same problem with upgrading from 98 to XP Pro from an upgrade disk with SP2. I am able to boot up in safe mode w/networking and there are no errors in the device manager for any hardware components. I tried installing any Windows updates, but I'm unable to install any of them from Microsoft website. I also tried to run a repair of the hard drive (incase of errors) but it can't run that either due to files being inuse.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Have a look at some of these.
