I have recently rebuilt my Windows XP PRO PC. I have a VPN setup to connect to a client when I need to.

The problem, when the PC boots and I access the network, say using Firefox, The VPN tries to connect. How do I stop this?
In Internet Options, I have "never dial a connection" set.

Any help will be very much appreciated, very annoying!

I would run Autoruns and see if you can see where that is automatically starting from. Don't know how it could start with Firefox if it's set to not connect.

Thank you for response, I am not sure I understand what you mean by Autoruns?

Actually, you need to be very careful what you shut off in autoruns if you don't know what you're doing. You can screw up the computer so it won't boot.

Perhaps you need someone that could help you look at your startup items with Autoruns or you could try MSCONFIG, but again be careful regardless.

I'm almost recommending professional help.

Thanks for the suggestion, I am not a novice, but will make sure to be careful. I will try and do some work on this problem over the weekend. I do not want to mess up the PC, I use it for work.

Again thanks for the suggestions...

I would use Autoruns and then follow these instructions and then be careful when unchecking any items

Navigate to the Autoruns folder you created and double-click on autoruns.exe.

When the program finished it's initial scan, click on the Options menu and enable the following options by clicking on them. This will place a checkmark next to each of these options.
1. Include empty locations
2. Verify Code Signatures
3. Hide Windows Entries

Then press the F5 key on your keyboard to refresh the startups list using these new settings.

What VPN is is it?

For example our Checkpoint VPN has an option to launch when it trys to connect to the Corporate network when logged in from an external site, thinsg like Office Communicator or launching the Browser when it uses a proxy server.

I tried Autoruns and found some things that needed to be unchecked. However, did not see anything that would cause the problem.

I noticed that it only tries and dials a Microsoft VPN when I startup FireFox. Internet Explorer and Safari is fine. I thought I found a Add-On in Firefox, but that did not help.

Again thanks for all the help and suggestions. I will keep trying to find the problem. When I do, I will post here.

In that case, uninstall firefox and then do a regclean with CCleaner, then reboot, then reinstall firefox.

This weekend I install WAMP onto my PC and was setting up some prototyping, when I noticed a couple of tunnel adapters. I found that this was from Microsoft TCP/IP version 6, either not installed or configured correctly. Once I removed it, my problem went away. I do not know why or when the new TCP/IP was installed.

Again, thanks to all that tried to help me. There were some good troubleshooting techniques I will probably use in the future.

I believe (may be wrong) that IPv6 is a standard update on XP (or maybe in an SP?).

I do not know; however, my wife's PC did not IPv6 installed.
