I have just installed a nt 40 server as a bdc. When the bdc is online all users are unable to logon. If I turn the bdc off, users can log on. I have checked the event viewer on both bdc and pdc and synchronization is succesful. Has anyone ever had this problem? Thank you for your help.

If the BDC is booted up after the users are logged on, can they continue to work?

What happens if you have both the PDC & BDC running and you shut down the BDC, can users log on?

Please advise. "Life is full of learning, and then there is wisdom"

I had the same problem about 6 months ago. The BDC was also a second DHCP server, The PDC was giving addresses in the range 15-128 and the BDC was giving addresses in the range 130-250. Everything was fine until a client got a IP address from the BDC. When this happened he could'nt log on.
I never did cure it so i switched off the dhcp on the bdc and reset all the clent ip addresses. Its been ok since.

If anyone knows what the problem was I would be interested to know

I have had this problem but maybe it was because of our network setup. The 6500 cisco switch was responsible for providing an ip helper-address which were the IP's of the PDC and BDC which told clients which servers to contact for dhcp. Both PDC and BDC entries have to be in there or the clients will only contact the one address. I may be way off the mark as your network but possibly something to check out

Regarding my previous message: my last question should have read ".... and you shut down the PDC, can users log on?"

Sorry.

The other respondants make a good point, is the BPC also running the DHCP service? If so, it will be conflicting with the 'real' DHCP server which may (or may not) be on the PDC machine.

Can you advise you network topology including the domain trusts and subnets? "Life is full of learning, and then there is wisdom"
