I have two Definity G3 PBX's, a 3 cabinet (J58890L, J58890H, J58890N) and a 2 cabinet (J58890L, J85590H). They both sit fairly close to each other and also partially block a patch panel that I need to get to from time to time.

What I'm trying to do is come up with a low profile dolly or caster wheel assembly that I can put on the cabinets so I can move them about a foot when I need too. The height of the cabinet is 2" from the floor on the feet that they have. I'd like to find something that has wheels that would raise it just enough for the feet to clear the floor.

I've heard that you can get casters for these cabinets, but to put them on (I assume) I'd have to shut down the PBX and turn the cabinet over or raise it up real high so I can remove the feet and replace them with casters. So I'm looking for something that I can put under it.

Has anyone put their cabinets on wheels so you can move it around easily but still be stable when it's just sitting there? I'm ok with building something if I can find the right casters. I've seen some adjustable ones that would work, but the wheels on them are 5" so that would require raising the whole thing off the floor... which wouldn't be bad on the 2 cabinet G3 but a bit high for the 3 cabinet G3.

Any suggestions will be welcome.

Thanks

Mike

is there no way to move the patch panel. all of my cabinets are bolted to shock mounts which are welded to the decks.

I wouldn't do it. Sounds like you setting yourself up for some kind of run away switch.

Definities to go??

I would move the patch panels also. The switches are not really meant to be moved around. One ooops with the cabinet and you could have bought a lot of patch panels and cables...

Hell, there are no rules here - we're trying to accomplish something.

All of our patch panels are bolted to the floor, not to mention all the cables that go from them to all the phone and computers in our building. So the 2 patch panel racks won't be moving.

When we just had the 2 cabinet G3, it wasn't a problem, but when we brought in the 3 cabinet G3, we had no where to put it except in front of the patch panels. That wouldn't be that much of a problem but it's also right in front of my 2 network HP ProCurve switches, 2 network routers and several other hubs that are also in the one patch panel rack. If I move the 3 cabinet G3 out a foot to give me good access to the patch panels then I can't get to the 2nd G3 or behind my 3 full server racks very easy.

Ideally, I would like to have locking wheels or the type of wheels that also have feet that screw down and lift the wheels off the floor like one of our server racks has. I'll probably end up making my own using caster wheels and angle iron, but I was hoping with enough G3's out there that a few people had already had to deal with this and had come up with a solution.

The funny thing is, when I first saw the room I'm using, there was so much space available... then I found out the floor mounted AC unit had to be in the room as well and a large power transformer. Both of these pretty much blocked off a corner of my server room for any kind of use, requiring me to move my server racks, G3's and wire and patch panel racks into a smaller space. So I have to make do with the space I have... as so many of us have to do. The G3's (or at least one of them) are the only things that are semi-moble. Not that I like it either.

Thanks.

I mounted my lab switch on wheels. I temporarily shimmed up the cabinet and removed the feet one at a time. I cut 4 pieces of plywood about 4 x 4 for the caster mounting bracket and drilled a small hole in the middle for the original screw. Predrill the holes for the caster mounting screws. Install the plywood with a single screw to the cabinet and fasten the caster to the plywood. I have a 4 cabinet stack that I can move as needed.

Thanks Kevin and Mike.

Kevin, can the feet be take off by just turning them or does a screw driver need to be inserted from the bottom? Or do you have to get to them from inside the cabinet?

Mike, that is very much what I am looking for. I was on their site this morning looking but didn't go into enough areas to find that one. Their site is running real slow right now so I'll check it out again later. Thanks for the link.

There is a screw to remove the feet. It is accessible from underneath. It’s real easy to remove or install the feet.
